Newport News dispatch reports the Corporation Court grand jury returned several indictments including one against Dr. H. Delaney Hicks, charged with raising a city bank deposit slip for 10 to 500 dollars and attempting to cash it. Hicks remains jailed without bail amid a career of escapades.
The Gen. Turner Ashby Camp met briefly with little business. The United Confederate Veterans will meet in Louisville, Kentucky, June 14 to 16. Miss Parks and Miss Mary Price chosen as sponsor and maid of honor for the Third Brigade of Virginia Veterans. Mrs. Harry E. Mauck visits family in Uniontown. Russell and Green’s Mid-winter White Sale continues.
The note from Joseph W. Leafe explains a $1 money order sent to his son George Harry Leafe for a Grit circulation contest prize. George Harry died at 21 in Portsmouth after months of illness, before the letter reached him, unable to read the results himself. The family will use the money to buy the newspaper he enjoyed reading.
Assistant Division Engineer L P Rossiter of Shenandoah division receives a new Elliott typewriter costing 200 dollars for office use. The bed is three times longer and twice as wide, with the sheet fixed while the carriage moves. It can produce seven copies and speeds up filling out the vast daily forms. Operator William Collins is showing improved speed, and the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad plans to use the machine in all engineers' offices.
All persons indebted to the estate of B. M. Dawes deceased are urged to pay and those with claims must present them to L. R. Detrra agent and administrator at the listed address within the stated period.
A wreath of flowers was laid on the Rouss tomb on Saturday last marking the sixty-ninth anniversary of the dead merchant. The tribute was placed by Mr. James White of New York City who had served in Mr. Rouss' employ for a quarter of a century.

Last night was described as the coldest in years for the area despite thermometers not dipping to record lows. The Draper's Self Recording Thermometer at Horsey & Atwell's on North Main showed temperatures from 18 at 7 pm to 1 degree at 7 am with a rise to 10 degrees by 10 am.
At the Norfolk Post Office two sealed mail pouches with cut straps were found and turned to authorities. One recovered on a Portsmouth pier, the other in a nearby lane. Inspector Bulla, brother of Rev. Chas D. Bulla, will determine if either pouch matches a Newport News loss reported a month ago.
The Knights of Pythias local lodge will send officers to the Grand Lodge annual session in Norfolk next week. Past Chancellors W. T. Hottle Henry Schneider J. P. Sartelle and W. R. Hillyard will attend with two of them staying as guests of Harry Hillborn at Portsmouth. The annual sermon for Winchester Lodge No. 65 will be given in March at Market Street Methodist Episcopal Church by Rev. W. C. Babcock of Baltimore. C. M. Nossett of Relief plans travel to Westmoreland County shortly.
Mrs Elizabeth Ridings widow of Thomas W. Ridings longtime Middletown resident dies at 11 Sunday morning after a brief illness aged 78. She leaves three sons J W Ridings Ernest and Arthur Ridings and three daughters Lee Mrs Robert Rhodes and Mrs Charles Rhodes. Funeral at Grace Methodist Church and interment at Mount Carmel Cemetery.
The death of Stuart Bowen is linked to injuries from a trolley car accident in New York about a month earlier. A Winchester native and former merchant, Bowen lay three weeks in a New York hospital before dying. his remains were later interred at Mount Hebron Cemetery.
A heat outage caused by frozen water pipes at John Kerr Public Schools forced dismissal at 9 am today. Principal Prof. N D Cool said pipes were repaired by afternoon and school will resume tomorrow as usual.
A new comprehensive Winchester directory is in preparation for delivery to patrons. A recent census update shows the city’s population at 6 739, with 4 979 white and 1 760 colored residents, about a 1 600 increase since the 1900 government census.

A freight wreck at Hagerstown cut delayed Cumberland Valley passenger service by about an hour yesterday. Engine and four cars left the tracks on the extra westbound freight. no injuries reported and tracks were cleared before 10. Conductor B Leidig led the westbound, with engineer Robert T Davison of Greencastle.
Winchester prepares for the March 1 launch of The People's Bargain Store at Market and Piccadilly Streets. John M Miller, son of Reese Miller and former associate of W W Ramaburg, will head the new shop offering novelties and general goods. Miller also serves as secretary of the Rouss Hook and Ladder Company.
At the Waldorf Astoria in New York 500 Elks will honor absent friends and brothers at 11 PM on Wednesday. Grand Exalted Ruler William J. O'Brien Jr of Baltimore will be guest of honor, having been elected at the Cincinnati convention.
Miss Emily Conner daughter of Mrs Mary Conner of South Main street has accepted a position with Mr T M Barr grocer of North Main street. She is well known to town and county purchasers after working with H S Baker millinery and with her sister in Woodstock and Baltimore.

The jury in the Faulkner case acquitted the defendant at 5 27 PM after a lengthy trial in Winchester. Attorneys presented closing arguments earlier, with testimony completed this morning and judge’s instructions given before the lengthy deliberation.
