Aged Wan attempts a rescue as fire destroys a house near Milville. Jed Bae D Whyte persists in the effort despite the blaze, leaving residents shocked by the damage and disruption to the area.
A blaze at the Porto Rico estate destroyed the Myler property and its contents, estimated at 25000. Dr Tyler and Mrs Whyte evacuated as the aged husband re entered the burning house in a bid to rescue his wife, who was later found among the ruins.
Miss Winifred St. Claire and her company presented The Wishing Ring at the Empire theater last night before a good sized audience. Ten prizes of 2.50 each were distributed by manager Bani D. Sipe among audience members who held tickets.

A recent cold wave pushed temperatures to around 8 degrees above zero last night. By this afternoon readings were slightly above freezing with noticeable moderation. Forecasts from Washington predict snow tonight into Friday for Virginia and a gradual warmup thereafter.

Billy McGuire reported his pony and cart were stolen last night and found later on the Pugh town road. His grandfather Dr William P McGuire had used the pony for a professional visit on Fairmont Avenue yesterday. The pony was returned to town after the lapse of a few hours with the driver unknown.
Information is sought about William Sullen Bryant, who was the editor of a Free Trade newspaper about fifty years ago. Anyone with details or records is requested to communicate with the undersigned.
Roanoke Va Feb 12 The case of Rev D F Landis a Lutheran minister arrested two weeks ago for violating the Mann Act came up for hearing before the federal commissioner today He is charged with transporting the wife of a neighbor named Jones from Moya County Va to Bluefield W Va
Richmond February 12 A strong rumor says the Seabee committee will report a bill tomorrow to settle the prohibition dispute. The plan would have the Senate amendment read For Prohibition and For Local Option, and postpone the closing date to May 1, 1917 if the state goes dry. If adopted, beer and wine manufacture outside the state would be barred and cider sales restricted. The conference committee worked late but may not finish before today and votes may come Friday. Party leaders and conservatives seek a swift, workable compromise to clear the issue.
Capt George W Kurtz commander of Turner Ashby Camp C V reports a date change for the annual United Confederate Veterans reunion in Jacksonville Fla now set for May 6 7 8 instead of April 29 30 and May 1. Veterans will be housed and fed in hotels rather than tents and Jacksonville is preparing extensive entertainment for the old soldiers.
The funeral for the late Mrs. Catharine O Leary widow of Frank Anderson will be held Friday at 2 30 PM from 114 East Gerard Street. Rev W C Talbert will officiate and six nephews George H Eagle C R Grubbs Maurice Arthur and Clarence O Leary of this city and Joseph O Leary of Middletown will be pallbearers. Interment is in the family lot at Mount.
A three story brick building owned by the estate of the late Oscar Barr at 160 North Main St will be sold on Saturday Feb 28. The property includes a side alley and the second and third floors are described as suitable for conversion into elegant space.

A simple wedding was held at the Baptist parsonage on Market Street last evening at six o clock with a small gathering. Miss Dana Violette became the bride of William H Huber in a ceremony conducted by Rev W H Carter of the First Baptist Church. Mr Huber, a farmer near Stephens City, and Miss Violette, daughter of S J Violette of Front Royal Road near Macedonia, plan a bridal trip to Washington and other eastern cities before moving into their newly completed home northeast of Stephens City.
Miss Emota Howard Wight of Middletown wins the $400 prize offered by the International Amusement Company of Chicago for the best amusing one act play about a marriage between titled foreigners and rich American girls. The winning title is The Magnanimity of Lord Henry.
The Friendship Fire Company plans its annual sermon at the Christian Church next Sunday evening at 7 30. Rev William T Walters, the company's chaplain, will preach. The captain urges a large turnout as about 380 members are urged to attend. the company will meet at the engine house at 7 o clock and march to the church.
Mrs. Barrie will be the guest of Mr and Mrs J W McSherry in Martinsburg West Virginia tonight and tomorrow. Dr and Mrs McSherry host a dinner this evening in her honor with Mrs H D Fuller and Miss Jean Douglas Fuller among the guests. A supper and dance at the home of Mr and Mrs William H Crawford in Martinsburg follows.
Berlin reports Herr Brandanger, the aviator, broke the endurance record for airplanes with a 16 hour mission. He flew to Kreuzer then to Posen and back, but descended due to fuel shortage. An antique furniture sale was announced for Wart Water Street at 11 am Saturday.
Prof. Graham Edgar of the University of Virginia will give a popular talk titled Industrial Triumphs of Modern Chemistry at Handley Library tomorrow night at 8:30. The Handley Trustees plan practical lectures to explain modern chemical marvels in accessible terms and invite the public to attend.
The Friendship Sarah Zane and Charles Rouss fire companies each received 350 feet of hose through councilman Charles L. Bawly. The Friendship hose withstood a rigid test at 210 pounds per square inch, and all three departments now hold about 1,000 feet, though more hose is needed.
The wedding of Miss Katharine June Milhon to Wilhelm Carlberg of Kansas City occurred at the bride’s mother Sarah Elizabeth Milhon’s home in Kansas City on Saturday February 7. The couple will reside after April 1 at 743 East Gilham Road Kansas City Missouri. The bride is related to Benjamin Fawcett of South Market Street and has Jarré family ties to Winchester and Frederick County.
