Messrs E. Cougill and J Har vey Canter become partners at the Baltimore and Ohio Station at Stephens City and run a mercantile business in the expanded store. Both are noted as energetic business men with prior partnership from 1898 to 190— at Canterbury. Cougill sold out to Canter and bought the Stephens City depot property, becoming B and O agent. The store tripled in size to meet growth and railroad affairs have increased, drawing on Cougill’s time, leading to Canter becoming a partner.

A five year old daughter of Newton Elsea of Clarke County died after her clothes caught fire from a fireplace blaze at home Friday evening. A farm worker doused her with water but she suffered extensive burns and died Saturday morning after lingering in agony.
Samuel Garrett aged 71, former distiller and Confederate veteran, died at 7 am at the home of Richard Adams in White Hall. Funeral from Adams's house at 1 pm tomorrow, burial in Old Stone Church graveyard at Greenspring. no ministerial service, prayers and songs at the grave. Survived by brother Joseph Garrett of Wordensville. had suffered paralysis since September and again last Friday.
The contested Middletown mayoralty case advances to the Court of Appeals after A. W. Brown won a mandamus order compelling the transfer of all office documents to Mayor F. Leslie Robinson. Robinson was appointed by Judge T. W. Harrison following a six year gap since Middletown had a mayor or town council.

E W Brown died at his Ridgeway home last Thursday night from old age and pneumonia. Born November 27, 1831 he is survived by his second wife Mary Keller. He married both wives in the same house where he died and had worked for the B and O Railroad at Martinsburg. Funeral services were held at Payne's Chapel conducted by Rev. W D Eye. Interment followed in the church cemetery with pallbearers named.
Mr Bruce Worthington of Winchester representing Jones Brother & Co Louisville seeks from Frederick Clarke Shenandoah and Berkeley fruit growers the acres in fruit bearing and proposed plantings for this year via a postal card. He aims to compile figures to present to the Louisville firm establishing a Winchester branch factory.
Funeral held for Vendela Orndorff five year old at Mt Zion A B Church near Fawcetts Gap. Daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Orndorff. Cause of death pneumonia and whooping cough. Pallbearers were Ruth Snapp Carrie Snapp Jessie Brumback and Venice Fawett. Interment in Quaker graveyard.
Rev. Wm. D. Smith, rector of Christ Episcopal Church, preached two unusual interesting and forceful sermons yesterday. Large congregations attended both morning and evening services. City Attorney R Gray Williams has gone to Baltimore for a surgical operation on his little daughter's arm.
A Sunday afternoon blaze on the old Stine place northeast of Winchester destroyed a cattle barn and its contents owned by Walter Stine. Loss around 1500 dollars with 1400 insured through Loudoun Mutual Fire Insurance Company. A horse and many farm implements were lost. a nearby cattle shed also burned. Cause under investigation with theories of accidental ignition or possible arson.
The Martinsburg Power Company has applied to Jefferson County Court for a franchise to erect a pole line and string wires from Dam No. 4 on the Potomac to Shepherdstown Kerneysville and Martinsburg. The plan aims to build a large electric plant at Dam No. 4 to supply light and power to Shepherdstown Martinsburg and a branch to Karnesville for the stone quarries.
Charles E. Wiley a Berryville turfman and former liveryman died after a brief illness at his brother Rev James Wiley’s home in Yancey Mill Albemarle County. Funeral in Washington DC with burial there. Survived by widow Florence Huyett and one son and three brothers Moses Edward and Rev James Wiley. He was 50.
Mr and Mrs Allen of Pasadena entertained the Crescent Club and many friends last Saturday night. The program featured readings by Daniel Lupton and Jonah Reese, music by Harvey Cather and Florence Allen, piano solos by Mrs George Sowers, and the club paper edited by S W Allen.
Mrs. D. Shepherd returns from West Virginia visit and looks after property left by her late husband valued about $9 000.

Nine men riding hand cars on the Washington line of the Southern Railway were imperiled near Strasburg when a passenger train struck their string of three hand cars on a sharp curve. The crew leaped clear as the engine rounded the curve, with several men bruised and flying debris injuring others. The train was traveling at high speed and the hand car operators were on the wrong time window for the passenger train, which was thirty minutes late.
