At a special meeting the Common Council authorized City Treasurer W T Barr to borrow up to 16000 from local banks for current expenses through May first, to be repaid as taxes come in. The body also approved leasing the city hall auditorium to Fred May of Washington for 1625 a year with renewal options and authorized fire escape work at the city hall.
A large audience attended Miss Winifred St. Claire and her company at the New Empire last night for Mrs Temples Telegram. The witty London comedy follows a husband’s white lies to keep his wife happy and features strong performances by Billy Brett, Nola Merer, Florabelle Malcolm, Bertha Allen and others. Curtains at 8 15. Tonight the play is The Girl from Out Yonder.
Two planes collided in midair near Johannesthal Germany. Aviator Degner on his maiden flight was killed. Lieutenants Leonhardi and Gerhard Yedimayer were injured in the crash occurring about a hundred feet up.

A vote followed the majority report by the special committee led by Mr. Sibert. Board members Brown Carter Cooper Gray Tanney Kremer Sibert Snyder Igzvist Baker and Dr. McGuire voted for. An ordinance allocating 1500 to erect fire escapes passed first and second readings. Sibert stated escapes would be erected by March 1. An ordinance with Fred May of Washington added to rent Auditor ium advertising passed first and second readings.
Virginia supported the War of 1812 with men and money as Baltimore prepares a September centennial. The 1814 battle of North Point and Fort McHenry bombardment inspired Francis Scott Key to write the lyrics, which became the national anthem after an executive order. Key witnessed the fort’s flag flying as daylight came.
Bids opened today for an 8 room high school at Stephens City. Superintendent M M Lynch presided as bids surpassed the $11 000 appropriation so no contract was awarded. Bids ranged from 11 900 to 14 265 with Leigh and Brother noted as Winchester builders of the local post office. Additional funds expected to cover the project and a future award will go to the lowest bidder.

Arthur S Dornblaser tunes pianos in Winchester and accepts orders at Hotel Evans. Local notice indicates he offers professional services for residents and visitors needing piano tuning.
Emilio Garcia, counted among Castillo's bandits, was captured at Hachita on the New Mexico border and turned over to United States military authorities. Garcia claims Castillo burned the Cumbre tunnel to hinder troop pursuit. The report notes tensions over Huerta's lack of recognition and an appeal to the United States to seize the Mexican gun boat Zaragoza upon its approach for arms.

James E. Everhart aged 49 died at his Laurel home after placing a rifle in his mouth and firing. The shot killed him instantly, heard by his wife who later found him slumped in a chair with blood. A Clarke County, Virginia native, he had suffered poverty and recent illness from cattle disease chemicals used in government treatment. Funeral services were held at Berryville Methodist Church with burial in Green Hill Cemetery. He is survived by his widow formerly Harriet Carlisle, two children, his mother, and two sisters.
An order from Corporation Court Judge T W Harrison appoints Robert Y Conrad as a member of Winchester Public School Trustees to fill the unexpired term of William T Barr who recently resigned to become city treasurer. Conrad has qualified and may take Barr’s committee roles unless rearranged by the board.
Dr Archibald Vineberz of Washington D C visits Winchester Virginia store on February 11 12 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. He offers eye exams and glasses at half price featuring Vineberg Shuron eyewear. The Vineberg Optical Co and Consolidated Drug Co Inc back his visit.
The Charley Rouss Fire Company finalizes plans for a banquet in Rouss hall honoring the birthday of the late Charles Broadway Rouss. Guests meet at city hall by 7:45 pm and depart for the hall escorted by firefighters. Music by a large orchestra directed by Miller Jenkins. Banquet served under James N. Moling. Fire destroyed the Second Universalist Church in Boston early today, causing an estimated loss of 160000 dollars. Hundreds of residents were displaced from nearby homes as emergency crews battled the blaze.

John J. Cornwell Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. John J. Cornwell of Romney West Virginia, died after a brief illness. He was a pupil at Shenandoah Valley Academy and highly regarded among students and faculty. Funeral plans set for Romney with burial at Indian Mound Cemetery. pallbearers included academy officers and local officials. His father, a West Virginia politician and editor, is noted for past gubernatorial candidacy and leadership in the Hampshire Review.
