Baltimore begins its recovery after a devastating fire. Officials from the governor to city leaders meet to plan relief and avoid outside aid, while chambers of commerce and stock exchange pledge rapid reconstruction. Private efforts surge as vacant buildings display temporary offices and labor calls go out for recovery work.
The Rev Dr Gamuel Cox of Winchester is honored as one of three Southern hymn writers featured in the new hymnal. His hymn Grace and Grace, set to I John xvi, is praised for robust theology and devotional cadence.
A local resident lauds Rural Free Delivery praising daily mail at 500 to 600 yards away and timely newspaper delivery. He notes ease of access, no cost, and urges a petition to the Post Office Department while thanking The Tax Star for support.

The Weather Bureau offered little warning as a cold spell hit Winchester. Temperatures fell to 18 above zero with damp air making it bitterly cold. Forecasters predicted snow tonight and Thursday as residents recalled the sixteenth anniversary of a severe blizzard that paralyzed rail traffic and shut the town for days.
The first and second Randolph-Macon Academy basketball teams meet at the academy gym Saturday night February 13 at 8 o clock. A Warren Light Infantry benefit musicale follows in Davie Hall Monday night February 15 at 8 15. Dr Byron W King of Kings College of Oratory lectures February 20 at 8 at Eastern College. Local visits include Wade Massey of Rappahannock, Annie Stengel of Washington DC, and O L Pritchard US Revenue Inspector. David F Frederick files suit against Southern Railway for 10000 damages.
The statement claims all insurance companies can pay Baltimore losses and still hold large surpluses. Miss Fannie C. Brown of Hartford Conn received a telegram this morning noting after losses paid they would have over 5 million in surplus. H R Bryarly and Co received similar word. Also mentions new embroideries and immense stock with low prices from dealers.
Elaborate preparations are under way for the 68th birthday anniversary of the late Charles Broadway Rouss, Winchester benefactor. The Charley Rouss Fire Company will host a banquet and toasts at their hall at Braddock and Water streets, with guests escorted from City Council chamber. The event, ninth annual, features toasts by notable speakers and a Junior Orchestra performance.

Mrs Alexander M Baker is seriously ill at her home on South Washington Street. Friends regret she had to cancel a visit to New York due to her illness, and she has been confined to her room for several days.
Mrs. Shirley Carter remains ill with grip at her home on Water Street though improved today. Miss Emily Weems returns from New Orleans and will stay with relatives in Winchester for the winter. Have you seen Russell and Greens display of new embroideries.

The Maryland Life Insurance Company of Baltimore confirms full insurance after a building fire. President William H. Blackford telegraphs Messrs James B Russell & Son, stating the building was partially destroyed but everything including books records and securities are safe. He calls it a fearful calamity but expresses gratitude.
Jane Robinson an aged colored woman died here yesterday at age 81. The funeral will be held tomorrow. Lawrence McCormick has been confined to his home for several days with rheumatism.
