The Richmond News Leader survey indicates Speaker Byrd and several leaders back a statewide prohibition enabling act and a bill to end the contract convict labor system, with 30 pledges from senators and delegates and more leaning in that direction as the January assembly session nears.
S L McFillian 69 died at home in Swimley Clarke County after a long illness. Survived by wife and five children Janney Carper W F Grabbs Grantham Welsh Milton Swartz and Robert A McFillian. Funeral 10 Friday at home with services at Crums Memorial Chapel and interment at Stones Chapel. Pallbearers listed. He was a pious neighbor known for helping in distress.
Miss Lena Nelson Roberts daughter of B Roberts of Swimley Virginia married William Milton Allen of Rippon West Virginia at Stones Chapel Presbyterian Church. Rev Samuel Knox Phillips officiated. Attendants included Ethyl Allen and Grace Whitmore. The couple plans to live at Rippon Lodge after December 30.
The University of Virginia Athletic Association seeks Percy Dalton as coach for the baseball nine. Dalton was a heavy hitter and superb fielder, one of Virginia’s best outfielders, and also played for Sandy Baker’s Winchester team. Now an attorney, he is believed to be out of baseball. He previously played with the Brooklyn club and once faced the New York Giants, allowing five hits to Mathewson in a single game.
The former mayor Thomas Neill Lup ton of Winchester was buried at Mount Hebron Cemetery after a church service at the Presbyterian Church. The ceremony included a Confederate Veterans tribute read by Rev. Dr. J. P. Hyde and taps from the camp bugler. Pallbearers were church officers W. S. White Henry Moling George Shep herd A. C. Slonaker T. K. Cart mell and Fred S. Boyd.
B L Prince a Baltimore and Ohio Railroad detective of Martinsburg and S G Galloway a Norfolk and Western detective of Bluefield were found guilty in Charles Town after a three day trial before Justice Green for making illegal arrests at Shenandoah Junction weeks ago. The cases were appealed.
Mrs. Julia Johnson, a long time resident of Charles Town, died suddenly yesterday from apoplexy at age 75. Born in Indianapolis, she was the wife of former county official and merchant Charles Johnson and a niece of Bishop Littleton of the Protestant Episcopal Church.
James W. McDonald a prominent Berkeley County landowner and fruit grower died at his Darkesville home after a brief illness at age 69. He native to the county and leaves a widow and four sons. Also notes urge mail subscribers to renew for next year. Eighty missionaries reached Hankow from Hu Peh Province.
Messrs. W. V. and J. Ne Hyde of Boston are in town visiting local contacts and conducting meetings.
Charles W Carson is appointed to a clerkship in Captain Conrad's office at the Front Royal remount depot. He left Warren County about twelve years ago, has served in the Philippines, and plans to sail from Manila in January to assume duties by March.
Love Lodge No. 311 Ancient Free and Accepted Masons elected officers for the coming year at its annual communication in the Masonic Temple. Barry M. Baker was chosen worshipful master, with Charles R. McCann senior warden and Rev. W. H. Carter junior warden. Other officers include L. Robinson treasurer I. N. Good secretary Allen B. Gray senior deacon and Dr Fred A. Cochran junior deacon. Baker succeeds W. S. Love who declined reelection.
Miss Gertrude Schneider has returned to Washington after spending Christmas at her mother Mrs Henry Schneider's home on South Braddock Street.
Messrs. D. B. Conrad of Washington and Davis Conrad of New York depart after spending several days at their home on West Water Street.
Mr. Marshall Baldwin departed yesterday after holiday time with his father Dr. Cornelius Baldwin.
Benjamin F Slane a Baltimore and Ohio Railroad veteran died at his Martinsburg home from paralysis aged 67 He joined the railroad in 1861 served as conductor for 19 years and was later yard master at Washington He survived by his second wife and two daughters and was a member of the Equality Lodge of Martinsburg Masons Born April 11 1844 in Hampshire County near Capon Bridge he was the son of John and Harriet Stans.

A Fredericksburg farmer writes from Winchester Virginia dated December 26 1911 claiming Amyl Kije cured him of rheumatic back and hip pain and chilblains after a few days of use. The letter names Amyl Kije Chemical Co of Winchester and signs Ip MNO P BOYCE.
Audiences will see two feature films at the auditorium this evening. Lost In the Jungles shows a girl fighting a leopard and an elephant rescue in Africa. In the Philippines is a notable Vitagraph war film with Lubin also featured.
Martinsburg announces the engagement of Miss Lillian Gorham Harrison to Mr. Forrest Augustus Brown of Charles Town West Virginia. The wedding is set for January 3 at the bride’s parents home with only relatives and close friends present.
Congressman Henry J. Flood plans to introduce legislation requiring cold storage houses to report monthly apple storage figures to the Department of Agriculture. He seeks barrel-based crop estimates to aid Virginia apple growers and align with tobacco storage reporting. He notes growers need accurate storage data to gauge pricing and industry growth.
Extracts from editor Nemo Grabill’s diary recount a company marching to destroy the Dama near the tomac then returning to Stephehad Depot. On Christmas Day 1861 they joined Woodstock friends to pack baskets with cakes pies chickens and butter for soldiers in camps.

Roanoke Virginia December 27 It is learned the trial of Rev W H H Joyce former pastor of Trinity Methodist Episcopal Church South will begin January 23. A thirteen minister committee will preside and Bishop Collins Denny will travel from Richmond to oversee the proceedings. The bishop is considering a successor to fill Joyce's unexpired Trinity term but has not decided yet.

George Carson, son of Mr and Mrs Joseph Carson of Winchester, has been appointed to the Naval Academy. He has lived in Ireland with his parents for four years and attended Randolph-Macon Academy Front Royal and the Virginia Military Institute at Lexington in preparation for the entrance examination.
