An eye witness reports Robert Beatty's death after a woman is crushed by pony tracks at a depot. Two intoxicated men, including her brother and brother-in-law, quarrel over an applejack bottle as bystanders and railroad workers try to help.
Charles W. Harvey, aged 85, longtime Baltimore and Ohio Railroad brakeman and Ellicott City agent, died at his Govanstown home after paralysis last week. He served nearly 60 years with B and O, married twice, with eight grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Henry Schneider came back today from Baltimore after attending the Pythiane jubilee at the Lyric last night. He reported a lively event with music and camaraderie among attendees from the society.
A head on collision between Baltimore and Ohio trains Nos. 10 and 47 near Boyds Md. halted the noon run and killed Conductor S T Gill. No injuries among passengers. The engine of No 47 was damaged and the tender thrown, track cleared quickly by Martinsburg and Brunswick riggers.
Winchester Aerie No 824 Fraternal Order of Eagles elected officers for the term led by Worthy president C Bowen and Worthy vice president W McKlanney. Past president Joseph H Savage remains honored. Aerie reports ninety members with two initiates and ongoing room renovations on North Main Street.
Mr W N Keller brings an old Winchester Virginian from 1832 1833 to The Star office describing numerous quaint advertisements. One ad by David W Barton offers cash for two enslaved men and a man to work on a farm in the Valley.
Readers learn that bowling offers beneficial harmless recreation. The notice invites people to visit the local bowling alley for enjoyable activity and relaxation.
Miss Elizabeth B Yost daughter of Mr and Mrs Milliard J Yost married Lawrence D Grubbs of Winchester at eight o clock last night at the bride’s home on North Kent street Rev E D Skelton officiated The couple will reside on National Avenue with a wedding supper for more than fifty guests from Winchester and beyond.
The remains of Miss Mary Susan Copenhaver who died at the hospital yesterday afternoon were taken to Providence Farm near White Post Clarke County this morning. Funeral services will be held at her home Saturday at eleven o'clock with burial in the cemetery beside the old Stone Chapel. Born February 1840 in Clarke County she was a widely known and highly esteemed resident.
The May Hillman Stock Company presents a special matinee this Saturday at 2 30 P M priced 10 cents to any part of the house.
Mrs Mary Mabel Rogers was hanged at Windsor Vermont for the murder of her husband Marcus Rogers at Bennington three years earlier. She collapsed in her cell this morning and required stimulants to revive. The case drew world wide attention as she plotted to kill for the sake of a young lover and an insurance payout.
At the Colored Baptist Church in Millwood on Wednesday night the wedding of Rev. Allen Williams and Evelyn Carter drew a large attendance of local Black elites and white friends. Visitors include Bettie Slagle of Winchester, while social notes mention Miss Lilian Garnett Strong’s upcoming debut and a busy Baptist meeting with speaker Miss Coe.
The large barn on Mrs. Stribling's Clarke County farm near Berryville burned at 1 am. Tenant E D Royston escaped with the help of several horses and cows but the structure and hay corn feed and implements were destroyed. Loss estimated around 2500 dollars covered by insurance with origin unknown and possible arson suspected.
Yesterday the community gathered at Jas Arlington and wife to celebrate forty years of marriage. A large group of relatives and friends from White Hall Washington Winchester Charles Town and nearby areas offered best wishes and shared a dinner with the couple before departing.
Commonwealth's Attorney Harry Kern investigated Dr. Charles J. J. Von Witt who advertised as a Von Witt Optical agent in Baltimore. He said he came to appoint agents and not sell goods. no license needed unless he offers products. If he sells, licensing and penalties apply. Von Witt traveled from Luray to Winchester.
L Harper Zirkle of New Market and Shenandoah county supervisor visited the Rockingham jail with postmaster W Wickes. Jailer Carickhoff led the tour as the board weighs building a new jail after condemnation by Judge T W Harrison. The facility, praised as a model prison, cost just over $20,000.
Miss Kate McVicar who has been suffering from pneumonia at her home on North Main Street is much better. She is recovering slowly from her illness but remains very weak. Her friends in Winchester hope she will soon be restored to health.
Mr. John V. Tavenner, noted Winchester and Frederick county representative in the Virginia Legislature, spent several days at his old Virginia county home this week. He is a prominent Norfolk real estate dealer.
John Hf. McCartney, formerly of this city, has opened a printing shop in Harrisonburg. The venture named “Present” Glass signals a new local business venture. Miller Supply Co.
Congressman James Hay has introduced a bill in the House to allocate 50000 dollars for a government building in Winchester. Speaker Cannon's stance on expenditures may shape the bill while Hay presses to win support in both the House and Senate. If approved, Winchester would gain a handsome new federal building.
The late Miss Nora Nott's will dated October 14 1904 directs sale of a residence and store room with one third to William Nott and Gory Nott and the remaining third to Bland Nott. Cash is to be divided between Mollie V. Kremer and Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church. A 1905 codicil refunds illness expenses. Mollie Kremer qualified as administrator with $2,500 bond. Will witnessed July 26 1905 by Katharine A. Steele and Henrietta Kremer.
A trespasser broke in at Fremont School and stole Miss Ella Benner's small desk bell. The intruder forced a sash window, removing a pane of glass to gain entry.
