German and British Fleets Engage Off Uruguay Coast

Dispatches from Montevideo report a naval clash off the Uruguayan coast between British and German fleets possibly with Japanese units in involvement. The Caracas steamer was sunk by a German transport off Chile, while German forces claim a complete victory at Lodz with heavy Russian losses.

War of Apples shipped to aid Belgium with no freight charge

A carload of Winchester and Frederick County apples was shipped from Robinson cold storage to New York for Belgian relief. The 120 barrels, consigned to Belgian consul Pierre Mali, will be sold by Loomis & Co. with no commission or freight charges, aiming to net about 260 dollars per barrel for flour purchases. A prior box of supplies was credited to Glendale Sunday school civic league, not Mr. Tanquary.

Arson Suspect Charles Rinker Held for Court In Hardy County

Moorefield West Virginia reports Charles Rinker has been arrested in Hardy County and held for court on suspicion of involvement in several diary fires. State and county officers say they gathered sufficient evidence to justify the arrest. The suspect denies the charges.

Mrs Samuel G Noakes of this city underwent a surgical operation last Tuesday at University Hospital Baltimore. She is reported to be recovering well and doing nicely.

Fiood Returns From Fruit Sent Abroad

Mr J W Sibert representing McGeorge and Jardine of England in the Winchester section received cable advices that three consignments of apples shipped recently from Frederick and Shenandoah counties to the Liverpool market yielded good returns. Mrs Thomas W Steck of Greenwood Orchard farm Opequon shipped York Imperials with net receipts of 3.12 per barrel. Mr W S Hiett and Judge Frank S Tavenner also shipped York Imperials to the same firm with net receipts about 3 per barrel. Miss Ellen Boyd left for Baltimore to visit friends.

Lawyer Forsythe Dies of Acute Indigestion at Lewisburg

The death of William Forsythe, a well known lawyer formerly of Front Royal and Warren County, occurred recently at his Lewisburg home. Born in 1875, he studied at Washington and Lee, practiced in Philadelphia, later partnered with Richard Evelyn Byrd in Winchester, and leaves a widow Martha Porterfield, parents J Frank Forsythe and siblings in Warren County.

Federal Court To Convene Tomorrow In Virginia

The United States Court for the western district of Virginia will convene for the December term in Harrisonburg led by Judge Henry Clay McDowell. Special matters include charges of alleged violations of internal revenue and liquor laws with deputies having raided mountain districts. District Attorney Richard Evelyn Byrd travels from Winchester to Harrisonburg for the session.

Valley Turnpike Suit Goes to Harrisonburg Court

Mr. Harry F. Byrd and Mr. R. Gray Williams left for Harrisonburg to face the case of James V. Crowder's administratrix suing the Valley Turnpike Company for 10000 dollars. The death occurred near Tenth Legion in Rockingham county on June 17 when Crowder's auto struck an obstruction while speeding.

Conversion reported at Market Street church meetings

Two persons professed conversion yesterday at Market Street Methodist Episcopal Church. One joined during the Sunday school gathering as Rev. H. G. Spencer spoke to the youths, and another at the evening revival meeting. Revival services will continue for several nights this week.
