A Winchester outing by the Sarah Zane Fire Company drew 488 travelers from Winchester and 380 tickets sold locally. About 824 people reached the Ferry, with many late arrivals missing the excursion and some paying full fare to ride the regular train.
A telegram caused a misunderstanding at Jordan's Springs. Governor Montague and his family will arrive Tuesday evening August 19 and attend the governor’s ball Tuesday night August 21.
Shenandoah Valley Bank vs Tidball executor decision by Judge Harrison in favor of the bank was appealed to the Supreme Court of Appeals. Mr. B R E Byrd represents the Tidball party.
A tender jumped the track in the Baltimore and Ohio yards early this morning, causing a wreck but not blocking mainline traffic. Wrecking crews from Brunswick cleared the switch, repaired the track, and the excursion to Harpers Ferry proceeded on a siding. the engine suffered heavy damage and was moved to Brunswick.
A morning altercation in a prominent hotel lobby left a colored porter with multiple injuries after a prominent young man, offended by insults the prior night, returned at dawn and attacked him at the desk. The confrontation ended when bystanders intervened.
A yard party is planned in Bridgeport on Front Royal road Saturday night August 16. All ideas and details are open for participation and discussion.
Yesterday afternoon David Hott withdrew sixty five dollars from Shenandoah Valley National Bank and later found his pocket-book containing the money at Cumberland Valley depot trackside. The money appeared untouched and many passersby had overlooked the discovery until a last search uncovered the concealed wallet.
Four children visiting their grandfather at Rosemont near Berryville Virginia escaped death when a lightning bolt split a massive oak they gathered under to seek shelter on the porch of C H Boxwell's home. The strike occurred during an imminent storm, narrowly missing the youngsters.
The Clarke Courier reports a plan to establish a Horsey & Atwell branch in Berryville Virginia. The Winchester clothing firm would bring an up to date haberdashery and likely boost local patronage.
Yesterday afternoon William Wagner secretary of the Sarah Zane Fire Company received a communication from the Virginia State Firemen's Association. The association will offer prizes for a steam engine contest with $65 for first place and $35 for second. The rules are set forth and the association will meet in Portsmouth next week.
A delightful surprise party was held last night at the residence of Mr and Mrs Knight at Lake View in honor of their cousin Miss Eva Hodgeon of Winchester. The gathering featured informal refreshments and well wishes in a warm home setting.
Mr J W Foote of Baltimore caused a wreck near Vaucluse when passing Miss Jennie Scothern as she opened a gate. The frightened colt pulled her from the buggy, the vehicle wheel and shaft were damaged, and she sustained painful bruises. Foote paid for the damages and rode on.
A dog fight beside a creek near Vaucluse caused a buggy to overturn and injure H. B. Kline and Edgar McCartney. The frightened horse backed into the run, breaking the shaft, forcing the occupants to jump into water to avoid a crash while en route to the Lineburg sale.
Little Dick Byrd has sent two letters home from his voyage around the world. One notes Chicago and another from a train bound for San Francisco. He stopped at the Palmer House and sailed Lake Michigan, reporting he did not get sea sick while others did. He plans to sail Saturday evening from San Francisco to Manila.
The Shenandoah Valley National Bank receives new furniture from Mayer Bros. of Cincinnati. Crew will soon arrive to install it, and the bank plans to occupy its new home shortly.
Hon Wm Hunt governor of Porto Rico spent days with his aunts Mrs Cordelia Briscoe and Miss Floredia Hunt at the Taylor Hotel then left for New York where his family is stopping He will return to Winchester before departing for Porto Rico early in Dr Addison Timberlake and wife who have been guests of Mrs Fannie Bartlett returned to Clarkeburg West Virginia
Mrs Minnie Purcell Janney wife of prominent physician Dr J E Janney died at her home near Albin after four weeks of nervous exhaustion. She was 43, survived by her husband and two children Elias and Rose. Funeral will be Friday at 10 am from her home with Rev Henry M White and Rev J J Fix, burial in Mount Hebron Cemetery.
Miss Emily Sloat of South Main Street saved herself from severe harm this morning while canning tomatoes. Her apron caught fire from an open stove, but she calmly untied and tossed it to the floor, quenching the flames and escaping with only a slight burn risk.
A rumor from Charlestown to Powhatan College claims Prof A C Hines was injured again near Upperville Virginia with a broken arm after a prior lightning stun at Stephens City. The college has not confirmed the report.
Miss Lula Haymaker suffered a severe puncture when a sewing machine needle pierced her finger yesterday afternoon at her home on South Market street. She endures considerable pain from the accident.
Frank Hutner of the Pitman farm brings a fourteen foot tall corn stalk to Winchester today. It is touted as the finest specimen yet produced and is on display at the Shenandoah Valley National Bank for public view.
Joseph E. Kiger secretary of the Cumberland Valley Firemen Association met in Martinsburg with Wm. R. Kline president to plan a September 1 meeting in Harrisburg. Officials will transact business and aim to add all fourteen Harrisburg fire companies as new members ahead of the 2d Annual Convention in May in Hagerstown. The association now lists 41 member companies and will decide on Charlestown and Shepherdstown departments joining.
A Wardensville West Virginia groom’s wedding was delayed when Horsey and Atwell mailed a shirt and two collars late. The firm refunded the money, then received a plea from a friend to rush the order. The shirt arrived and the marriage was postponed just long enough to complete the wedding proper.
A marriage license was issued this afternoon to John A. Dorsey 32 and Nellie McCarty 22 at the Corporation Clerk's office. Dorsey is a stone cutter and McCarty is the daughter of Samuel McCarty. The wedding is planned for tonight.
Mrs. Ralph Savage and her young daughter Elizabeth left this morning for Deer Park Maryland to spend some time. Mr Savage accompanied them part of the way and will proceed to Philadelphia.
Mr Robert M Henry sold a small piece of property on North Market Street to Mrs Barah F Boyd for 250 dollars yesterday.
Major James W. Denny former Congressman from Maryland's Fourth District Baltimore filed for the Democratic primary yesterday depositing 25 dollars with the Supervisors of Elections. He is a Winchester native and brother of Robert A. Denny of Sibert and Denny jewelry firm. Denny served in Congress from 1898 and was unseated in 1900 by Charles R. Schrim.
A short Maryland Virginia note reports a party of youths who attempted huckleberry picking near Va but quit after several miles and returned with berries. Mentioned are Dr Hamilton and wife en route to Marlboro, visits by Miss Maggie Gordon, Mr and Mrs E R Campbell with John Brehm, and Miss Cora Barley improving after illness.
A country horse near Chambersville in this county attacked a bicycle ridden by Cal Ramey while being driven by T J Largant of Slanesville West Virginia. The colt kicked the harness apart destroying two shafts and damaging the buggy after the riders met on the road.
A Star reporter notes Frederick County may face apple shortages as supply expectations weaken and buyers hesitate to travel for fruit this year. Dr John A re, a leading local grower, cautions on cautious sales and market impact.
