Special to News from Koenigsburg Prussia October 14 fire in a coal mine trapped more than 100 men. Six bodies were recovered near the surface as women and children wailed nearby and rescuers struggled. The fate of the rest remained uncertain.
The Fiscal Court convened at 10 am Wednesday with all members present. Squire Renick proposed road supervisor D S Haggard investigate building a bridge on Stoner Dirt road and report findings. The poll tax collected this year will fund the Road and Bridge account. The court ordered payment of election officers and adjourned to meet Thursday at 10 am.
If the schedule holds, Judge Taft and his party will arrive shortly after 1 p m Thursday. A stand will be erected on the portico's south side to accommodate several thousand spectators for the reception. Congressman John W Langley will introduce Judge Taft.
Fire at London Kentucky started about five this morning in a livery stable burning a horse, seventeen buggies, harness and feed valued at five hundred dollars. The blaze spread to a brick drug store and store office building housing a grocery and restaurant, offices of lawyers and doctors. Loss estimated at forty thousand dollars with partial insurance. The courthouse and other structures narrowly escaped.
The Brown Proctoria hotel lobby features large palms placed by citizens without homes for winter. The palms are not hotel property but are lent by locals who take pride in helping maintain the hotel’s celebrated beauty in Kentucky and beyond.
County Clerk J. A. Boone issued a marriage license Wednesday morning to A. R. Dennison and Tina Emma Collins, residents of Clark County.
A surrey carrying Mr and Mrs B H Hag gard and daughter and Mrs Wheeler Hag ard was frightened by an automobile driven by W R Thomas. The horse reared and the car forced the surrey into the street car track. No serious injuries occurred though spokes were broken and the party was shaken.
The first meeting of Winchester News Company stockholders was held at the company office. Directors elected for one year were J. W. Chambers W. A. Beatty and R. R. Perry. Officers chosen: W. A. Beatty president J. W. Chambers vice president R. R. Perry secretary and treasurer.
Elder John S. Sweeney a renowned Christian church preacher died at his Paris Kentucky residence on Higgins avenue at 1 10 this morning in the 77th year of his age He traced a line of preaching back to Alexander Campbell and belonged to a family of clergymen including his father and grandfather Both brothers Geo W Sweeney of California and Zack Sweeney of Columbus Indiana are noted pulpit orators.
The new in-town residence of Mr. W Bloomfield on Lexington avenue has been completed and leased to Mr. Thomas Brock who will move in from the country at the start of the month.

In Detroit Chicago won 3 to 0 to take a 3–1 lead in the 1908 World Series. Brown pitched a four-hitter with four strikeouts after Detroit failed with runners in scoring position. Offensively Chicago used a third inning rally on two bases on balls a steal and two hits and added another run in the ninth. Attendance and receipts were noted as the crowd faced a muddy field and near ideal weather.

Nine feet of water must develop before coal can be shipped from Pittsburg and the Great Kanawha river.
Belgrade Oct. 14 Milovanovic the foreign minister denied mobilization or concentration of the Servian army. He said there is no longer danger of hostilities for a time as the people grow calmer and the government will await the proposed conference outcome with Great Britain's advice.
Andrew Cope, brought to Milton from Berry Dale, is jailed for the murder of Lula Dixon, a Berry Dale girl. Parents say she drank water laced with quinine he allegedly gave, and died shortly after.
The Richmond Kentucky post office vault was broken into and many registered packages were taken. About 160 dollars in money was stolen. No suspects are identified.

Chicago, Oct. 14. In the railroad phase of the government suit to dissolve Standard Oil, Henry E. Felton, Stand ard Oil traffic head, faced questions from Frank B. Kellogg about 1112 cent and oil cent rates from Whiting to Toledo and Cincinnati. Rosenthal and Kellogg sparred over immunity records and railroad prosecutions.
Major Carmelo Castro, brother of Venezuela’s president, arrived in New York on the steamer Zulia on a pleasure trip. He refuted reports that President Castro is sick and said there was no reason to transfer power to the vice president. He added the president is not an enemy of the United States and is acting to defend Venezuela’s interests.
A well dressed woman named Julia Curtis, claiming ties to Chicago and Hagerstown, Md., was found on a Delaware River pier intending to jump. A policeman intervened, she was detained, and taken to Philadelphia hospital. A note reading Goodbye Joba From Julia Curtis was found pinned to her clothing.
In Columbus on October 14 William H. Stockman of Crookeville formerly New Lexington tried to speak from a Columbus theater stage claiming to be governor in place of Andrew L. Harris. A prior warrant for lunacy filed by Probate Judge Haynes at New Lexington was in police hands.
Putnam County voted to retain saloons by a majority of 145 in Ottawa on October 14. The count was the largest ever cast in the county.
