The Burley Tobacco Society district board met in secrecy in the county courthouse grand jury room for its second session of the year. county reports indicated a large crop, with plans to organize the 1909 crop pooling and possible changes to the pledge terms. Miss Alice Lloyd attended after leaving the society recently.
The juror names for the April term of Circuit Court have been drawn and are with the sheriff for summons. The term begins on the first Monday of April.
Prof. R. M. Shipp has received an invitation to deliver an address at the next Kentucky Educational Association meeting in Estill Springs in June. The topic assigned is The Problems of the Truant and the Delinquent. He has not decided whether to accept.
James Gibson Martin, a longtime county resident, died at the Confederate Home in Pewee Valley on Sunday March 14 and was buried Monday afternoon in Lexington cemetery beside his wife who died ten years ago. He served in the Mexican and Confederate armies and was 87 years old.
R. R. Perry sold his half interest in the North Main street lot containing the frame office to J. D. Jones. The brick house south wall will be torn down and a partnership wall erected. The residence becomes three stores with two upper living rooms. Jones sold to Bloomfield and Powell the lot he bought from the Stubblefield estate and three feet of the Taylor lot. They, with Mr. Jones, begin foundations for a double block with stores below and living rooms above.
Schutzbar Milg, a civilian, fought two duels in Eisenach on March 16 and killed two opponents, army Lieutenant Von Butilar and an army surgeon whose identity is not disclosed. Jealousy is cited as the motive. Milg's wife is American.
Hon. J. M. Stevenson chair of the Clark County Democratic Committee issues a call for a meeting on March 22 at 1 p.m. in the grand jury room of the courthouse to issue the official call and arrange for the county primary set for May 25. Full attendance is requested.
In a near even contest at the college gymnasium Lexington High School seconds edged K W C Preps 17 to 15. Caldwell scored eleven points including four field goals and three fouls while Ruggles starred for Lexington with strong all around play. The two teams meet again soon in Lexington with both squads showing speed and teamwork.
Mr. Thos. Edmonson returned from Indian Territory with a remarkable skull sent by Mr. Wm. Wells to Sam Wells of this place. The skull measures seven inches across and eight inches from nose to base, taken from a turtle weighing 99 pounds near Beggs, Oklahoma. Anyone may view the skull by calling at Sam Wells on Hill street. its species is unknown.
Fire in Richmond Kentucky on March 16 nearly wiped out the boiler room of Ed Blanton and Co. lumber yard and caused substantial damage to the machinery. The blaze origin is listed as unknown.
Mr N H Witherspoon sold the arcade livery stake on Court street opposite the government building to L H Bush for 7500 dollars last week. It is believed he will continue renting it as a livery stable for a period.
March 16 New York. The Press Publishing Co The World and Caleb Van Hamm plead not guilty in Federal Court to criminal libel charges arising from Panama Canal posts. Untermyer seeks a special jurisdiction plea and Van Hamm posts 5000 bail for April 19 appearance.
Washington March 16. The Kentucky Democratic Congressmen voted as a unit to overthrow the House rules. Kentucky Republicans voted for Cannon and the rules. Congressman Kimball nominated for clerk by Ollie M James. James also spoke for Champ Clark for Speaker. Kimball's nomination places him in line for the next Congress if the House remains Democratic.

President Taft urges Congress to promptly revise tariffs as government expenses for the fiscal year are set to exceed receipts by over 100 million dollars by July. He calls for focusing the session on tariff questions while Cabinet members prepare for inspections and overseas negotiations.
Washington March 10 Willis L Moore head of the Weather Bureau defends forecasts after criticisms over the March 4 storm. He notes the storm began March 3 and forecasted center path matched, but snow instead of clearing northwest winds occurred, an outcome he says forecasters could not predict.
Winchester residents will quietly celebrate St Patrick’s Day on Wednesday with a simple tribute by wearing the Shamrock. Mass will be held at the Catholic church in the morning, continuing a long standing local custom without a formal program.
