Auctioneer H R Watts reports the sale of E R Allen near Becknerville on Wednesday February 21, drawing a large crowd despite severe weather. Prices for livestock and farm goods are listed, with hogs, cattle, horses and hens bringing varied sums, and farming implements selling well.
Henry T. Clemens, about sixty, died February 14 at his home near Key West in Kenton county. He was a Baptist, brother of Mrs. J.P. Osborne, and left five sons, two daughters, and many friends. The family laments his loss, praising his Christian life and peaceful rest.
A warrant is issued to stop all contact between Mary Vanhook and her alleged husband J B Vanhook. John Oaks of Ford reports Vanhook may be in Indianapolis. chief officers fear he left the city and request word from Indianapolis. Mrs Vanhook is critically ill in Lexington. Oaks says Vanhook has another wife and three destitute children in Pulaski county. The man first came as a book agent in Ford and married Mary Oaks by charm. The marriage took place amid his pursuit of Mary.
The first presidential boomers to arrive in the city include buttons bearing Woodrow Wilson and the inscription For President 1912. Mr J Smith Hays is distributing the buttons.
A warrant was issued charging Raymond Blye with grand larceny for allegedly stealing a chicken from John C M Day. The trial was set for Friday night in Police Court. Blye had been jailed on suspicion and police noted blood on his trousers, claiming it came from a nosebleed rather than the bird.
Fire destroyed the large general store of J Taylor Day at Frozen Creek Breathitt county Mt Sterling Ky Feb 23 with stock and building losses estimated at 10 000 to 12 000. Insurance of 5 000 carried by Hogmans Agency in Mt Sterling. Cause unknown though accidental fire not established.
Mr. Day, brother of Floyd and John Day, of this city, is well known here where he has many friends who will regret to hear of his misfortune.
A large crowd attended the masquerade at the Auditorium skating rink on Thursday night. Carrie McEwan won first prize as a bucolic country girl, Carrie Lee Warner took second prize as a witch, and Chas Locknane earned third prize as a trapper. Albert Graves won the mile championship race, earning entry to the February 28 championship event.
First Christian church offers a notable Sunday with A. E. Corey of the University of Nanking in the morning and Dr. Royal J. Dye of Bologne Africa in the evening. The church, formed by missionary founder Dr. Dye, supports seventy missionaries and has a history tied to local cannibal-raised members.
On February 28 Skovgaard the Danish violinist and Misses Wright and McClung perform at Miss Mary Belle Field Miller’s home under Hart Chapter to support the D A R. Skovgaard, known to royal courts, plays a Stradivarius valued at 13000 dollars. The event promotes D A R efforts including Continental Hall in Washington and broader patriotic causes across Kentucky and states.

News of the elopement and marriage of Miss Mayme McLin to Mr. Oliver Kash reaches Hazel Green. The 16 year old bride, granddaughter of Mr. Taylor Day, fled with Kash after parental objections, hiring a costly horse and buggy to North Middletown then Paris and Cincinnati, with Dr. J A Gilkey accompanying them. Kash is a Hazel Green banker and brother of Prosecuting Attorney Kelly Kash.
Judge J. N. Evans Eli Dooley and F. F. Goodpaster named by the Fiscal Court to receive bids for the construction of a new Clark County jail.
Vernon Kindred aged 18 was hurled ten to fifteen feet when a gas jet exploded in the Auditorium engine room at 2:30 Friday afternoon. He was skating ledge when the blast occurred, suffering burns and cuts to the left hand neck and ears and singed hair. Fire department extinguished flames. engine room sustained considerable damage.
Mr Charlton Lowe an 83 year old Confederate veteran and longtime Winchester resident suffered paralysis while at his daughter's home Thursday evening. He remains in critical condition with left side weakness and speech impairment. Drs Johnson and Stubblefield attend at his bedside as friends express deep concern.
Assistant Chief W M Brown brings Sigmund H Speyer from New York to Lexington for an examining trial after his arrest in Ib boroken New Jersey on embezzlement charges against Speyer & Sons. Bond set at 500 dollars with Moses Kaufman as surety. Speyer cites possible settlement with the firm.
Assistant Chief Brown and Speyer & Sons agent Jacob Speyer chased down the case after a late Chesapeake & Ohio train arrival. Sigmund Speyer’s arrest warrant was issued, a $500 bail bond posted by Mr. Kaufman, and Speyer agreed to appear at Judge Southgate's police court Friday for an examining trial. Speyer planned to return to Lexington with a Woodrow Wilson requisition.
Cincinnati cattle and hog markets show steady to active trading. Cattle prices range from 3.74 for common cows to 7.00 for top extra steer, calves and lambs mix with highs around 6.85 for lambs and 6.60 for top hogs, with steady sheep and steady to strong lamb demand.
The Auditorium will be open as usual Friday night after an afternoon fire caused no material damage. No injuries reported and operations proceed as planned.
Mrs Susan McMillan aged eighty five died Wednesday at her son Jake Morgersons home after a short illness. A Madison native, she had lived in Clark for forty years. She was twice married. The Morgersons reside on the Muddy Creek road on Mr A Howard Hamptons farm. Interment was in Shearer Grave Yard Thursday.
William Kindred aged 65 died at his home near Ford last Monday after a four year paralysis illness. He had lived in this county six years, moving from Estill and buying a farm on the Ford and Hampton turnpike. Surviving are several children and his wife. The body was taken to Estill county for interment Tuesday.
