A correction from the Winchester Democrat notes the assertion that merchants pay nearly twice as much for space in the Democrat as in other county papers is untrue. The Winchester News offers open advertising contracts for inspection and states it maintains one price to all.
Isaac Cole McClanahan, about 66, hanged himself near Ford in Clark County. Discovered by daughter-in-law Mrs Virgil McClanahan around 4:30 Friday morning. He had suffered long illness and despondency. Inquest led by Squire Andy Dykes found death by hanging due to unsound mind and bad health. notes list jurors S M King, S B Smith, A R Vaughn, William Holder, S E Eades, R C Cunningham.
Lexington Kentucky February 17 Mr R J Thomas of this city has bought half interest in the Big Hill coal mine of Pineville He went to Winchester Friday afternoon and closed the deal with Henry Clay Thompson The main office will be in the Lexington City National Bank Building and the firm will do wholesale business exclusively The mine has a capacity of 500 tons a day.
Georgetown Ky Feb 17 Jeff Lake a former saloonkeeper was fined 100 dollars and costs in Scott Circuit Court for selling whiskey in a local option territory. The case was appealed from the lower court where he received 60 dollars and 40 days in jail. He sold three pints according to testimony.
In a raid on the soft drink establishment of Mr. Luke under the Wellington Hotel, three barrels of Sam Clay whiskey bottled in bond were found. One bottle previously bought by James Humphries for Frank M. Thomasson was delivered to him in the sheriff’s presence. Sheriff Ed D. Smith headed the operation with Deputy Milligan Fleming, Chief James McNally, and Night Watchman Charles Morgan. Llewellyn F. Sinclair defended, while City Attorney B. M. Lee prosecuted for the Commonwealth.
Henry Hall of Sideview Ky died Friday after weeks of partial paralysis that worsened. A Union veteran 67, he owned about 600 acres and had loans owed to him. His estate valued around 150000 dollars. He lived in the county many years and belonged to the Grand Army post. He was the last of a large brotherly family and widely known locally.
Adjutant General Fred C. Ainsworth was relieved of his office on charges of conduct prejudicial to good order and discipline and placed on the retired list after 37 years of service. President Taft approved the retirement, avoiding a court martial. Supporters sympathetic to Ainsworth planned a broader War Department inquiry, while Rep Hay signaled the issue was settled.

New Orleans Feb 15 Geo H Maxwell leads push to organize a National Drainage Congress April 10-13 to raise awareness of drainage and irrigation needs. A National Reclamation Association will coordinate regional divisions with 1000 members each in the Mississippi Valley East West. The aim is to pass Newlands River Regulation and related bills through Congress and state legislatures.

The Burley Tobacco Society of Kentucky sold 5,750 hogsheads of 1902 pooled tobacco at about 17 cents per pound to Theodore Kirk, a Cincinnati and Covington broker. The lot wipes out all holders of the D grade. Kirk is among the largest Burley buyers, with roughly 18,000,000 pounds purchased since December 5, and another deal is pending to absorb more of the 1909 pool.
Lexington citizens and Commercial Club members voted for a thorough investigation into the natural gas situation. Colonel R A Thornton cited company profits averaging $100000 a year for three years, and Captain John Tonkin of Oil City Pa discussed efforts to meet extra demand during the past two cold months. Attorneys said the franchise could not be disturbed, but excessive charges could be remedied if proven. January bills ranged 25 to 100 percent higher than December. A committee to investigate will be named later.
Frankfort Ky Feb 12 The House passed Senate Bill 21 creating a State Insurance Commission to regulate rates except life. Despite a strong lobbying fight and a bribe accusation against Rep Meyers the bill advances after Senate approval and awaits Governor McCreary's signature. The session also tackled road aid bill SB3 and local measures as both chambers adjourned to Monday.
Mrs Florence McDowell Shelby widow of Thomas Hart Shelby and mother of ten children died at her Lexington home Friday night at 1140 oclock at age 73 from an apoplexy. She had long suffered rheumatism and heart trouble and was deeply mourned by prominent Lexington families.
