The News installs a 24 000 pound Duplex press from Battle Creek Michigan to speed production. Mr W S Bates leads the setup with a ten horse power motor. The new machine prints the entire eight page edition in under 30 minutes, inviting readers to view the process.
Washington reports the administration sees the California agitation as driven by powerful corporations protecting coolie labor interests. It warns that extreme rhetoric and Nevada legislative resolutions threaten Japan talks and port closure objectives. Officials support prohibiting alien landholding while trusting Pacific coast citizens to act responsibly. A Japanese relations note praises Komura's Diet remarks. A Memphis mystery man is identified as Roy C. Porter of Ottawa after two weeks in the city.
After fall term exams the City School promotes several pupils for the first time before year end. Promotions require steady effort. parents aiming for June promotions should have children maintain focused study for the rest of the school year. The following pupils were promoted.

In Birmingham Alabama seven teen men died in an explosion at Number 2 Short Creek Mines of the Birmingham Coal and Iron company. Five were white and twelve were negroes. Officials say seventeen fatalities total. Mines lie ten miles west of Ensley and access is difficult. General manager Alex Bonneyman and inspectors Hillhouse and Flynn rushed to the scene. Ambulances were sent from Ensley and coffins prepared for the ill fated mine. The windy shaft is blamed for the disaster.
Revenue from Tuesday night charity skate at the Auditorium under the King's Daughters and rink owners totaled 5015. Funds will be spent on clothes coal and food for the town's needy. A college girls basketball game was canceled due to a scheduling misunderstanding. A broom ball match between Auditorium first and second teams entertained spectators. Next event is broom ball Wednesday night between Auditorium first team and Hagan Engine employes' team.
Mr O R Webber district inspector for East Tennessee Telephone Company arrived Wednesday to oversee moving its office to the corner of Lexington avenue and Main street. A line crew and workers will begin immediately to relocate equipment and the company will occupy the new offices as soon as work is completed.
State Inspector W. C. Terhune completed inspections of county official offices in the city Tuesday night. He reported the offices were in first class order and found nothing to complain of before proceeding to inspect in Sterling.
Miss Ruth Beall departed Tuesday afternoon for a pleasant visit to Louisville.
A Commercial Club meeting in Winchester urged the city to retain all current fire apparatus including horses, opposing sale when a new automobile hose wagon is purchased. A Public Policy Committee was tasked to work with city officials and local lodges for upcoming Grand Lodge events in 1910 and for inviting the state Grand Commandery to Winchester. An open session in the opera house was planned for late month.ณ์
The News notes an overcoat and teeth lost earlier in Judge Evans' office were found after a Tuesday story. Mr J P Bush saw the item and recovered his belongings. A South Main street resident recovered a small dog two hours after placing a lost ad in The News.

At the regular meeting of Winchester Lodge No. 20 F. and A. M. Tuesday night the F. C. degree was conferred on John Temple Jones.
Elder J. W. Havyding will preach at the Church of Christ Sunday morning and evening services, inviting all to attend and hear the gospel.
A Lexington telegram from J Kennedy Tod owner of the Lexington and Eastern Railway Co. says the road has not been sold and not offered for sale. Rumors began from a reported sale of the Louisville and Eastern electric line causing confusion with the L and E in the mountains.
At a recent Ivanhoe Lodge meeting No 48 K of P an executive committee was appointed to arrange entertaining the Grand Lodge meeting in October and to appoint all other committees. The members are Col T G Stuart R O Fitch C E Bush C H Bowen S W Powell B T Spencer and E L Upham.
Rev Dr Hambly spoke to large crowds at the college chapel on Tuesday night and Wednesday morning. Tuesday's talk titled 700 Miles by Snow Shoe and Dog Train examined endurance and exploration. Wednesday's address titled The Beast that Carries the Prophet promised further insights.
