Nixon frames Wallace vote as support for Humphrey in South
Nixon argued a Wallace vote in the South equals a vote for Humphrey, saying Wallace cannot win and the result could force a House runoff. Wallace aides denied romance rumors about his campaign worker Ja-Neen Welch, who said she loved him. Humphrey campaigned on prosperity while Muskie faced antiwar protesters and urged calm among youths disillusioned by defeat in peace efforts.
