U.S. Troops Find Sapper Bases Near Saigon in Vietnam War
U S para troopers uncovered two Viet Cong sapper camps within 15 miles of Saigon as Lt General Julian Ewell warned of a terror flurry. The 82nd Airborne located one camp northwest of Saigon with 30 pounds of plastique and other gear, while a second was found eight miles west. Seven sappers reportedly died. no U S casualties. The bases mark the closest to Saigon in seven months. The U S command also noted a new round of troop withdrawals, reducing authorized forces to 484 000 by December.
