After years of planning the city will begin pumping from the new north fork water supply plant southeast of Middle town at about 10 am. The start will alter mains flow causing turbidity due to sediment as crews test the system under strict laboratory controls.
Five persons died and at least 11 others injured when a four story brick tenement burned on the near North Side early today. Children were dropped to safety as firemen fought the extra alarm blaze. arson was suspected.
Big Stone Gap Virginia police pursued six armed escapees from a western North Carolina road gang after they hijacked a car and fled into the Appalachian mountains. Officers backed by bloodhounds and a state patrol plane circulated the area as the fugitives, led by Raymond C Gilley, were last seen near Big Stone Gap.
Mary Seath a fifth grade teacher at Emory Elementary told House investigators she felt in a precarious position after being asked to testify publicly on conditions in the DC public schools since integration. She said the directive and remarks from a board member implied possible reprisals and she fears for her job as a temporary teacher.

Early today two northbound Baltimore and Ohio freight hopper cars loaded with stone derailed near E Piccadilly St and E Fairfax Lane, blocking two streets for hours. No injuries reported. A broken rail caused the crash at 2:30 am. repair crews and a crane worked from Brunswick, Md, to clear the wreck and restore traffic.
In Henderson Kentucky a white boycott cut Weaverton school attendance by about 75 percent with segregationists urging parents to keep children home until five Black students leave. About 206 of 870 pupils studied, while five ministers from the Henderson County Ministerial Association attended to advocate Christian restraint.
About 200 farm wives from Riverhead New York traveled to Washington to press for higher potato prices They say top grade spuds sell for 1 50 per hundred pounds but prices of at least 2 are needed They expect 400 more wives from New Jersey and Pennsylvania to join in Washington to picket the Agriculture Department and Benson and to meet Agriculture Committee members of the House and Senate
Hurricane Flossy weakened to a broad rain system over southern Georgia and northern Florida after causing nine deaths and property damage along the Gulf. It centered just west of Albany, Georgia, with winds near 50 mph and rain that alleviated drought across the region. Nine deaths were linked to the storm, including a jet crash near Tallahassee and two aboard the Carport vessel, with multiple missing persons and missing crews in the Gulf.
A twin engine C47 with twelve people aboard crashed into Mt Yale near Buena Vista Colorado. The victims included civilians and military personnel. rescue teams reached the scene after a five hour ascent. Names were not released. The aircraft belonged to the Continental Air Defense Command on a flight from Colorado Springs to Hamilton Air Force Base.
Franklin Va authorities served a warrant on J Fenton Mathews ex-president of Merchants and Farmers Bank charged with embezzlement in excess of 30 000. Bank board chair Colgate W Darden Jr said examiners found a substantial shortage in Mathews accounts and he was removed by the board.
Samuel Davis arrived yesterday to assume duties as superintendent of Winchester National Cemetery succeeding Les Harvey who left for Fayetteville Arkansas. Davis is a World War II veteran from New Jersey with a background in the Army Memorial Division and Fort Dix finance work and will lead the cemetery with his wife and four children living in the superintendent quarters on National Avenue.
