London reports Smolensk, key to German defenses on the central Russian front, fell to Soviet troops. Rosl at 65 miles southeast along the Desna also capitulated, per Stalin's order detailing a hard-fought victory that contradicted Berlin's evacuation claim.
In Washington Secretary Hull and British Foreign Secretary Eden and Soviet Commissar Molotov are expected to meet in Moscow to pursue a tripartite wartime aims and postwar cooperation. Harriman, Hariman’s appointment as ambassador to Moscow, and Standley’s retirement are noted in the context of the talks.
A community center building costing 100000 dollars was proposed as the Winchester and Frederick County War Memorial. The plan called for public subscription funding, a War Memorial Museum, memorial plaques, central city location, and a usable recreation center for the community.

MINERSVILLE Pa Sept 25 Fourteen men dead and nine injured after an explosion tore through the fifth level of the Moffett Schrader coal mine 1200 feet underground at Forestville. Rescue efforts paused as deadly black damp gas filled the level. officials planned a fan to vent gas once a motor arrives from Scranton.
Firemen from nine cities controlled a burning gasoline spill after two derailed Erie tank cars exploded in Ashland Ohio. Gasoline flooded streets and storm sewers, destroying Eagle Rubber Co and railroad facilities, damaging a YMCA field and several buildings. No injury count yet.
All units participating in the parade this evening are asked to meet promptly at 6 15 p m at the Kerr School. The Auxiliary Police should be on hand with full equipment. Marching will include firemen and service clubs among others. The parade moves promptly at 6 30 p m.
Brig. Gen. Edgar Glenn reports the 14th U S A A F suffered a major raid on its China headquarters on September 20. Japanese losses included 15 confirmed bombers shot down and two Zero fighters destroyed, while American losses were minor with one P 40 down but the pilot safe.
Cairo Sept 25 report says RAP light and heavy bombers hit the Nazi airfield at Maritza Rhodes for the third night in a row. A fire and explosion were noted. British planes also raided Maleme Crete, starting fires. all aircraft returned.
Madrid reports from September 25 indicate Rumanians may negotiate an armistice with Allied powers at Ankara. Rumanians reportedly first sought to meet only western powers, then joined tri power talks. Balkan observers link the talks to tensions over Transylvania and Axis influence in the region.
The Trianon reports securing the services of the famed John as chef of the Southern Inn for ten years. Special business luncheon at 50 cents offers meats and vegetables. Sunday dinners start at 1.25 with house pies and pastries. Bar l headwaiter handles reservations at Dial 4243.
Shawnee Lunch will be open Sunday offering country ham and fried chicken dinners.
Terrific artillery duels lit the rugged area north and northeast of Salerno through the night as Allied forces push toward Naples. Fifth and Eighth Armies report heavy enemy casualties, 3,000 German prisoners captured since Salerno landings, while Allied losses run light.
