London reports indicate fifteen killed and about seventy wounded in a German air raid last night though damage was light as only one or two aircraft reached the city. Germans used Gotha planes and aeroplanes in coast and inland attacks aided by high explosive fire. An irony noted that Gotha machines were formerly British and stolen after a shot down plane.

Last Rites for Frederick A. Shryock Held at Winchester
Funeral services were conducted at Braddock Street Methodist Episcopal Church for Frederick A. Shryock, a noted fruit broker and farmer, who died after surgery for appendicitis. The church was filled with friends from Winchester, Frederick and neighboring areas. The Rev. Cy Sydenstricker led burial rites. pallbearers included John Thwaite, Phil H. Gold, Dr. B. M. Knight, J. Robinson, Robert S. Smith and Dudley S. Snapp. Mount Hebron Cemetery burial.

Explosion at Newton Manufacturing plant kills one
A massive blast at Newton Manufacturing in Warrenville near Lowell on September 2 injures over a dozen and kills one. The plant, producing scrapnel and shells for the government, housed nitroglycerine and shells and caused widespread damage including broken windows a mile away. Officials gave no cause and workers were unsure what exploded.
