Challenger Jack Dempsey flies from training camp to Philadelphia as managers protest for his safety and delay the title bout. A court rejects a last attempt to stop the fight, clearing the path for the bout.
The weather bureau forecasts cloudy skies with occasional showers this afternoon or tonight and Friday for eastern Pennsylvania. Forecaster Mitchell says showers will likely be light with no sign of heavy rainfall. He noted uncertainty about any impact on the Dempsey Tunney fight in Philadelphia.
Heavy storm clouds hovered over the Dempsey Tunney fight arena in Philadelphia as intermittent showers drenched the site. Officials warned only a weather postponement could stop the bout, while rapid preparations continued to complete seating and exits for a record crowd of 132,000. Mrs Crismon reports a near total devastation in southern Florida and that only a few houses remained standing as the storm raged for a full day. The Danleys survived with minimal damage to their house and belongings despite severe conditions in the area.
Helen Brewer and Sadie Creamer, two young women, are jailed in Winchester after stealing Attorney John M. Steck’s Nash automobile twice in 24 hours. They rode the car Tuesday night and again Wednesday, returning it near Steck’s home before police found it. Police later arrested them in Strasburg, where they were seen driving. They face larceny or unauthorized-use charges as the insurance company pursues the case.
The 127th annual Virginia Conference of the United Brethren Church opened in Harrisonburg with Bishop Wiles and Bishop Bell urging a national revival to stabilize the economy. Membership tops 20,000 as the session runs through Sunday with reports showing growing activity across Western Virginia Maryland and Eastern West Virginia.
In Martinsburg West Virginia Judge W E Baker offered clemency to 21 year old John Lillis of Winchester who pleaded guilty to liquor trafficking after 76 days in jail. Lillis received a $100 fine and declared he would quit the trade, while B R Palmer faced a capias after bond forfeiture for liquor dealings.
Rebecca A. Taylor aged 88 died at 4 this morning at her sister Mrs. Sara J. Brown's home 386 Charles Street from infirmities of old age. She leaves a sister and many nieces and nephews. Funeral at 2 p.m. tomorrow from Mrs. Brown's home with Rev. J. C. Hooks officiating. interment at Lamp's Memorial Church cemetery.
