40 mile speed in school zone results in $10 fine
Perry C. Painter of Stephens City was fined $10 by Judge John Rice for driving 40 mph in a school zone on S Cameron St. Winchester police recently stenciled Slow School on streets entering school zones and ordered officers to cite violators.

Three Winchester pedestrians struck in double nighttime accidents
Three women were injured in two separate incidents on Winchester streets. Mrs Beulah Ploeger was hit on Cameron Street around 9 15 p m by a hit and run driver and later identified suspect Curtis Coffelt 45 of R 1 Winchester was charged with reckless driving. Salome Crisman and Mrs Edna James were struck on Piccadilly Street near the George Washington hotel as they crossed from the north curb to the south curb. Crisman remained hospitalized for shock and injuries while James was treated and released. No description of the car was obtained and police pursued leads on the hit and run case.

Slippery Roads Blamed for Three Highway Mishaps
Slippery roads were blamed for at least three highway accidents yesterday in the area. A mobile Army Air Force weather station on a two and a half ton truck slid over a five foot embankment near R 50 west of the Clarke Faudquier line scattering about sixteen thousand dollars in equipment. A second crash occurred when a car skidded into another and knocked down an Air Force officer. Trooper E B Mitchell was near unharmed and Capt F C McAndrews of Tinker Air Base was knocked down but not treated. The truck driver Pfc Elwood Nelson was unhurt. Continued on Page 9 Col 4.

Red Cross to Hear Blood Program Chief Newin at Winchester
George A. Newin, assistant director of the American Red Cross blood program, will address the Winchester Frederick County chapter at its annual meeting next Tuesday at Episcopal parish hall on West Boscawen Street. Chapter officers will be elected, and voters include any donor who gave $1 or more. Newin, a Pennsylvania native with a BS from Penn State, runs the non-technical side of the national blood program as it affects donor centers and is regarded as an engaging speaker.
