U S government data show consumer prices up five-tenths of a percent in August extending the five month rise, with gains in food other than meat fuel and clothing. The 6 percent annual inflation rate and falling real incomes reflect ongoing pressure on workers’ purchasing power.
The Winchester School Board voted unanimously to drop a plan for a chain link fence around Handley High School football field amid strong community opposition. The Building and Grounds Committee will study alternatives to crowd control and field protection while noting costs of current snow fencing and field damage.
President candidate Jimmy Carter lands in political hot water as his tax reform remarks and a Playboy interview draw fire from Republicans and wary voters. Critics say he misreads tax figures and politics while supporters push his record, but the episodes threaten his election prospects and alter campaign dynamics.
President Ford meets Liberian President William R Tolbert Jr at the White House on the eve of Ford’s first televised debate. Tolbert, in Washington four days, will address Congress and attend a state dinner, with days in Atlanta Philadelphia and New York. Ford also touts tax relief plans while defending his economic policy amid the campaign. In a separate incident, a car tied to former Chilean ambassador Orlando Letelier exploded near the Chilean Embassy, killing two.
Tanzanian President Julius Nyerere said Kissinger told him Ian Smith accepts majority rule in Rhodesia within 18 months to two years. Nyerere called his mood improved and awaited a public statement from Salisbury. Kissinger seeks two pledges from Rhodesian leaders before negotiations begin.
