American artillery smashed German assault forces launched from Boise De Rappes across a two mile front. U S batteries shelled enemy positions in Hanumont and Xmacs areas as air and naval actions supported Allied patrols. Serbian and British advances reported in multiple theaters with prisoners taken and strong points captured.
The United States Weather Bureau issued a forecast of light frost for tonight in western Virginia. The report notes frost may occur as leaves turn and temperatures drop after recent rains. A warning that early frost could presage a severe winter is acknowledged but not certain.

Isaiah Bowman a well known Back Creek Valley farmer was found dead beside the road near Hay field between 4 and 5 pm. Passersby John Loy and John Wotring found him beside a horse and cattle. suspicion graves heart trouble as the cause. Bowman 61 years old and a bachelor, had ignored his doctor’s advice to stay in bed.
A British monitor was sunk in a harbor on September 15 due to an internal explosion. Twenty crew members were killed and fifty seven remain missing, according to the admiralty announced this afternoon.
A new timetable goes into effect tomorrow affecting all trains at Winchester. Train 1 arrives 9 46 a m up from 9 20, Train 7 arrives 7 33 p m, Train 6 leaves 7 10 a m, Train 12 leaves 5 25 p m, daily except Sunday. Train 110 runs Sundays only at 2 46 p m instead of 2 20 p m.

J. R. Rosenberger was fined $3.60 in police court for language “reason ably calculated to provoke a breach of the peace.” The incident occurred last Wednesday night on Main street during a concert when he taunted Mayor Ward after being ordered to clear the roadway. The mayor, in official capacity, stated the offense was the taunting attitude that prompted the charge. The fine was paid. Lost items include a black handbag and hotel ticket with a liberal reward offered.
There was no change today in the smallpox situation according to Inspector J Robert Doran and health authorities. They believe the scare will be confined to the family of origin and those members will be moved to a city isolation house with comforts and medical care at the city's expense.
