Reports from Paris Sofia and London say French and Serbian forces advance against Bulgarians in Saloniki and near Pizoder Thiau mont and Apremont. Bulgarians retreat toward Monastir as Allied offensives continue amid weather induced pauses. Portuguese troops also invade German Africa crossing Rozuma river.
Winchester Commandery No 12 Knights Templar holds its annual inspection on City Hall Plaza after 8 pm led by Right Eminent Grand Commander Joseph T Houck assisted by Inspector General Rudolph Bumgardner with possible Virginia Grand Commandery officers attendance. Supper at 6:30 pm in Masonic Temple banquet hall precedes a parade headed by the Friendship Band and inspection afterward. Attendance expected from Winchester and nearby towns in the Shenandoah Valley.
The remains of Mrs. Mary C. Ogden widow of Thomas Ogden of Middletown were brought from Hagerstown where she died. Interred at Mount Carmel Cemetery after a grave service led by Rev. J. H. Haley. Survived by three sons three daughters one adopted daughter Mrs Philip Chapman of Winchester and fifteen grandchildren.
Bert Dudley an ex convict who was convicted of murdering Henry Miller and his wife near Clathe Kansas was taken from the county jail by an armed mob and lynched. The mob strung him up to a telegraph pole on Sept 21 amid long running hostility since the August 20 murders.
USDA market bulletin from Winchester lists 1 400 barrels of Yorks and 600 Ben Davis at specified sizes and color, with national price ranges for Virginia Yorks Grimes Jonathans and related varieties. Wednesday shipments totaled 233 cars, including Virginia Potomac Valley and New York State consignments.
Calvin Muse pleaded guilty in the United States District Court at Martinsburg West Virginia to transporting Lucy Payne from Virginia into West Virginia and was sentenced to six months in Morgantown West Virginia. Several other white slavers were convicted. Miss Pauline Bowman of Portsmouth Virginia visiting Miss Cora Cain of East Monmouth Street left yesterday to Shenandoah County for a few days with friends.
President Wilson plans two speeches in New York during the campaign with one in New York City and another upstate to be chosen. He says the trip will not be a stump tour and believes it would offend the dignity of the office to campaign for re election. He had no political appointments today.

Berryville Virginia September 21 The regular September term of Clarke county circuit court will convene next Monday with Judge Barley of Alexandria presiding. A number of chancery cases are set for hearing. It is a grand jury term but little business is expected before the jury.

Passenger traffic officials of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad to meet in Pittsburgh for their annual staff session to adopt fall and winter schedules and discuss service improvements. Local officials say no radical Shenandoah district changes are planned, though unprofitable trains may be reviewed. Mr and Mrs Samuel Hodges and Mrs E L Rhinehart of Shepherdstown went to Winchester to visit friends. Mrs J H Lewis left for McKeesport.
The funeral for Clara Spiker Maphis wife of Dr B F Maphis of Strasburg Va who died from injuries after being run over in Strasburg on Sunday was held in Strasburg today at 2 pm. Her body was interred in the Strasburg cemetery. Mr and Mrs J L Maphis and Miss Lily B Maphis of this city attended.
New London Conn September 21 American commissioner says withdrawal of Pershing troops from Mexican soil will be agreed within days. Plan calls for Carranza soldiers to guard border area between Villa forces and the United States, with borders to be part of the plan to be sent to Washington and Mexico City for ratification. Reported Chihuahua control by Villa might delay recall but not for long.
William Brown of Clarke county visits Harrisonburg to renew old ties with two fellow survivors of the Rockingham Rifles. The trio, all veterans from Company B Tenth Virginia Infantry, served in the Civil War under Capt. Coffman and later lived in Virginia towns including Lacey Spring and Port Republic. Brown relocated after the war and returns occasionally.

A new millinery shop opens Friday September 22 at the Miss New-Lene estate drawing local shoppers. The event promises hats and accessories showcased in a formal preview.
The Winchester Athletic Club approved extensive upgrades including hot and cold water showers lockers a finished gymnasium and a growing library. New members were added and plans for football and basketball teams were raised for discussion next Tuesday night. Renowned local clergy attended the meeting and membership forms were provided by club officers and committee members.

Reports from New York exporters indicate an increase this year in apple shipments despite ocean freights rising from 32 to 37 cents to 2.50 per barrel. Principal markets are Liverpool Glasgow and London. Last week Liverpool shipments were about double the previous year at TAG barrels versus 4,934 barrels in 1916.
Mrs Lucy Payne widow of late Charles Payne longtime engineman on the Shenandoah division of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad died at her Sandy Hook Maryland home. She was daughter of Mrs Martha Custer of Summit Point West Virginia. Her remains were laid to rest in Edge Hill Cemetery Charlestown read Moling and Seals House furnishing ad on page 5.
Dr Roy K Flannagan assistant state health commissioner of Virginia arrived in Winchester sent by the State Board of Health to Stephens City where six virulent smallpox cases are reported He will work with county physicians and order compulsory vaccination and quarantine the Potter Brill street area in Stephens City remains under strict quarantine with no further developments reported today
