John L. Lewis' contract with Northern soft coal mines expires at midnight. A strike threatened for Monday looms, with some mines continuing to operate and paying overtime to extend a section before any shutdown.
John L. Lewis raised pay demands to 80 a day for 200 000 miners as Northern mine owners debated a small labor cost rise or shutdown. Harry Moses of the Bituminous Coal Operators Association signaled near agreement on terms, with a 20 cent welfare royalty and 10 cent adjustments under discussion.
Miss Dorothy Cooper, longtime executive staffer of the local Girl Scout council, will resign to serve as assistant director of an Army Service Club in Japan as a civilian with Army Special Services. She departs Seattle for Japan mid next month for a two year tour planning recreation programs for enlisted men. Miss Parley Massey succeeds her as executive director on a temporary basis.
Lieutenant Governor Preston Collins collapsed from a heart attack in Wytheville Virginia. He died shortly after arrival at Chitwood Clinic and ahead of a planned speech at the dedication ceremony for George Wythe High School. Collins was 55.
Caudle testified before a Justice Department panel that congressmen used influence in tax cases, naming past senators and representatives. Former Sen. Scott Lucas conferred with him after leaving Congress. The judiciary subcommittee led by Rep. Chelf heard testimony and scheduled further appearances.
A kickoff dinner announced the 1953 campaign season for the Community Concerts committee. Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo and the Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra Piano Quartette will headline the series with additional concerts dependent on membership size. Plans for the coming year will be discussed at Monday’s meeting.

A U S Air Force craft from Cha teauroux crashed while landing at Orly Field striking a tele graph pole. Three crewmen were killed and one seriously injured. witnesses saw the plane skim rooftops over Villeneuve Roi before impact. Names were withheld pending next of kin notification.
Virginia police report John Justice Ferguson age 25 of Chattanooga Tennessee died in a two car crash on U S Route 360 at Amelia Virginia yesterday. The death raised the 1952 Virginia traffic toll to 615.
Gov. Adlai Stevenson awarded his son a Marine Corps commission at Quantico as 601 officer candidates, including Stevenson’s son, completed ten weeks of training and became second lieutenants. He urged the group to strive to fulfill future promises rather than past errors, amid more than 5 000 spectators at Butler Field.
Charles Chaplin 63, currently en route to Europe, faces a government order barring U S reentry until officials determine if he may reenter under immigration laws. The order cites no stated reason but notes potential morality or political affiliation concerns. Chaplin was born in England and immigrated 40 years ago, never naturalizing, with past leftist associations and a 1944 indictment later dropped.

A second crash at Braddock and Boscawen Streets involved a 1951 Snapp and a 1949 Ford coach.
Gustav Nagel a 34 year old Cologne laborer and former Luftwaffe bodyguard for Mussolini says he would join an official search for the sunken treasure. He claims the hoard includes gold jewels and currency packed in cases hidden in Lake Como with plans to finance a flight abroad.
Thieves forced the front door of the Imperial Ice Cream office at 427 North Cameron and removed a small safe containing over $1,000 in cash and checks. The theft occurred between 10:15 p.m. and 6:35 a.m. and was discovered by Gene Clark. Police Capt. Prencis Funk and Sgt. Warren Rudolph are investigating. this is Winchester’s third safe theft this month after two from Shenandoah Motor Company.

Not Ayer, 65, American-born composer of popular tunes such as If you Were The Only Girl In The World and Oh You Beautiful Doll, died in Bath yesterday after collapsing while walking in the Abey church yard.

In Frederick Maryland a 13 year old cyclist George Thomas Bruchey Jr died after being struck by a Staunton Virginia truck driver Jack Rudolph 42 of Staunton Fruit and Produce Company. Rudolph said he was passing the boy when Bruchey swerved toward the curb then back into the truck.
In Portsmouth the Navy recommissioned the 27 000 ton aircraft carrier Lake Champlain, part of the Essex class. Assistant Secretary John F Floberg said the ship can handle long range bombers capable of carrying the atomic weapon and hopes he can help prevent another war.
