Kernstown Virginia patrons and teachers appeal to the Frederick County School Board to fix alleged unsanitary and dangerous conditions cited by state authorities. Students and staff contribute labor and funds as officials say necessary work will begin once labor can be secured and when other schools are considered.
Chicago dispatch reports a door to door canvass of every U S farm to gear 1942 crops to the defense program by December 1. Wayne H Darrow says 7 000 000 farm families will fill a questionnaire with state quotas broken by counties and county defense committees carrying out farm to farm canvass. The plan aims at specific increases in meats and products with some wheat and cotton reductions and shows cooperation brings patriotism and profits with no penalties.
President Roosevelt said he would study the $3.553 billion tax bill for up to 48 hours before signing and that delaying the measure a day would not cost the government. At Hyde Park he discussed naval losses, elections, and shipping strikes while sorting naval books for transfer to the Washington archives.
President Roosevelt rejected proposals to expand army control over defense industry and keep measures on raw materials export under civilian agencies. Charles Hancher resigns as director of the Frederick County School Band due to inability to commute between Shenandoah College at Dayton Virginia and Frederick County amid a heavy course load.
