Hurricane Esther tracks west north west across the Atlantic with sustained winds up to 150 mph and gusts near 200 mph. The center lies about 725 miles east of Boca Raton and 460 miles southwest of Bermuda, with central pressure around 27.55 inches.
Chief J. Thomas Boyd announced a week with no traffic accidents, the first in years. Handley Ave became one-way from Handley Blvd to Kerr St, and Kerr St from Kent to Highland Ave returned to two-way traffic, both effective immediately.
About hundred attendees witnessed the dedication of improvements at Winchester airport including a paved east-west runway taxiway aircraft parking area and new terminal buildings. Dignitaries praised aviation and urged continued support for airport funding and regional industry growth.

Four persons were killed and eight injured last night in a four car crash three miles east of Warrenton on U S 29. Ray Zborillo 45 Culpeper and Mineral S Crawford 45 Washington were killed. Crawford's wife Susan died in hospital. Barbara Wilson of Washington also died. The crash involved multiple vehicles and a fire. Other fatalities included Catherine Robinson Epps 21 Saluda and Reginald Johnson Snead 24 Charles City. Ibert Farthing 21 Altavista died from injuries in a separate near Bedford. Adnan Menderes, former Turkish premier, was executed for crimes against the constitution after a 10 month trial. His ministers Fatin Rustu Zorlu and Hassan Polatkan were executed earlier, while ex president Celal Bayar and others were given life terms.
Dag Hammarskjold the United Nations secretary general died when his DC6B crashed while en route to Congo peace talks from Ndola. Nine others were aboard. rescue teams found the wreckage near the Congo Rhodesian border. The UN mourns the loss as searches span multiple nations.
The Northwest Airlines Electra plunged after takeoff from O Hare, killing 37 aboard including a mother and four children. No survivors. Investigators seek cause, tape of cockpit conversations under analysis. FAA and C A B officials say no known malfunctions or explosions.
A heavy docket opened the September session of Frederick County Circuit Court with Judge Elliott Marshall presiding. True bills were found against seven defendants led by Ray E. ace as grand jury foreman, including Gertrude Abrell and Linden Unger. Various cases ranged from forgery and drunken driving to larceny, with sentences and pretrial actions set for the coming days.
