Winchester shoppers trimmed meat purchases as sales fell from 25 to 33 percent. Egg prices rose three cents a dozen wholesale, retail at 83 cents. Heavy hens and broilers up one cent per pound. bacon up to 99 cents, hams 76 cents. Meat prices overall edged higher across the board.
Philadelphia butcher shops report sirloin at 1 to 1.10 a pound with prices up three to ten cents. Milk prices rise in Pendleton and St Louis dairies add a cent per quart. Chicago faces a federal grand jury probe into meat pricing as grain margins are urged to double to curb market volatility.
Wenatchee Washington reports ideal weather and rising prices fueling a strong apple picking season in the Wenatchee Okanogan district. Officials estimate up to 700 cars moved last week versus about 100 in the prior four years. Red Delicious sold around 4 to 4.25 per box FOB with other varieties at 3.25 to 3.50, some Jonathans reaching 3.40.
Sumner- ville Georgia September 16 Judge Claude Porter of the Superior court condemned a constitutional violation after letters from two Floyd county prisoners revealed more than 100 inmates were jailed without trial for months. He blamed Floyd county commissioners for refusing to pay a court reporter’s fees, hindering speedy trials as required by law.
George Ratlief of near Strasburg and a member of a Northern Virginia Power Co. maintenance crew at Front Royal was killed instantly when he touched a high voltage wire while working on a transformer near Sperryville. He was about 30 years old.
New York Sept 16 Dr Oswald Aranha retiring president of the United Nations Assembly warned the world will organize peace or hasten war over UN council tables. He urged a humane postwar approach and said the aim of the UN is to promote all means to obviate recourse to war beyond mere political balance.
Louise Overall testified at her murder trial that she and George Gollum bought dynamite at her father Walter Overall’s request two days before his yacht exploded in Newport Harbor. She described the sequence from a USC class ditch to buying dynamite and returning home, while the defense casts doubt on intent and motives.
The British Treasury said the International Monetary Fund agreed to provide Britain 60 million dollars in exchange for sterling in the next few days. A government source indicated Britain may seek a 320 million dollar loan from the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development to further ease the crisis.

In Pittsburgh two aged sisters Frances Moby Bittner 89 and Rose were found severely malnourished in a Squirrel Hill apartment after neighbors and police intervened. They had lived in seclusion since a sister died three years earlier, their only income possibly old age pensions.
Senator Pepper of Florida argues there is no chance to curb inflation and warns Americans to expect another recession. He blames Republicans for removing price controls and says only massive subsidies and near-dictatorial power could lower prices now.
Game Warden Earl Cather reports fewer squirrel hunters in the woods today compared with opening day. Yesterday many hunters were out but only one violation for hunting without a license. The most observed hunter bag was five squirrels. the daily limit remains six.
CHICAGO Sept. 16. Choice to prime weighty steers sold at $35.75 per hundred pounds, a 15 cent rise from yesterday and the year’s high, nearest the all time cattle record of $39 last Nov. 29. Other cattle grades held steady or edged down, hogs and sheep were steady to higher.

NEW YORK September 16 Harry Walker Philadelphia remains the pace setter in the American League batting race. Walker extended his hot streak with 14 hits in 31 at bats through Sunday raising his average to .362, 46 points ahead of the nearest rival. Ted Williams of Boston slipped to .335 while Taft Wright Chicago stood second at .323, Barney McCosky Philadelphia .322, and Joe DiMaggio New York .321.
Weather reports show a slow westward shift of a great Atlantic hurricane toward Florida. Warnings extended from Fort Lauderdale to Titusville as the storm neared the coast with winds up to 160 mph. Officials urged precautions across the peninsula and warned Lake Okeechobee residents of potential flooding as forecasters monitor possible landfall directions.
In Manhattan two groups of teenage girls fought after a taunt about a block. About 200 teens clashed with 100 more spectators cheering, while residents doused burning tempers with water. Police intervened to end the melee.
