A new cold storage plant near Winchester will boost the region to the nation’s top apple storage sites. The combined capacity with Robinson Storage reaches about 250000 barrels and opens September 20, featuring Brine Reservoir System and fireproof reinforced concrete construction.

Southern Railway announces a timetable adjustment effective after the last Washington train at 145 p.m. on Saturday September 15 discontinuing No 123 on Saturdays at 145 p.m. and arriving Harrisonburg at 810 p.m. Train No 21 will depart Washington daily except Sunday at 345 p.m. instead of daily except weekends as at present.

Charles Alexander of Clearbrook was granted a one month army discharge after claiming exemption for a dependent wife and child. With both dying, exemption grounds disappeared and he is ordered to report for service. Two other married men were discharged for dependents. The district board will certify more names to reach a 40 percent quota by next Wednesday amid white-only selection.
American men join seafaring ranks as the United States Shipping Board plans to field 500 navigators soon. Across 27 coastal schools and seven technical institutes, trainees prepare to man and power a future surge of U S steel ships.
