Wreck of Tiny Plane Found in Newfoundland Wilderness
The weathered remains of a 670 pound single engine plane were found in western Newfoundland after Thomas H. Smith of Clarksburg West Virginia vanished in May 1939 during a planned trans Atlantic hop from Old Orchard Beach Maine to Slyne Head Ireland. A note from Smith explained he would walk to seek civilization as freezing temperatures set in. The crash site was identified from air photos and matched to Smith's aircraft by US authorities with Royal Canadian Air Force help. Harvey F. Smith of Clarksburg expressed astonishment at the discovery and noted his son was 27 when he undertook the flight to prove small planes could cross the Atlantic.
