Busing Goes Smoothly For Delaware Schools
Northern Delaware schools opened under a court order merging 11 districts into one system. More than 21 000 students rode 600 buses with 93 percent attendance and only one scuffle reported. Governor du Pont praised the calm start while noting challenges ahead.

Antibusing leaders predicted thousands would keep children home to protest a mandatory integration plan involving bus rides up to an hour for 62 000 students. About 32 000 students in grades 4–8 must participate, with 30 000 volunteering, in the 570 000 student district over 711 square miles. Police planned 15 helicopters to monitor 2000 buses as concerns about early pickups and 30 mile freeway trips arose.
