A hurricane swept Belize causing Zoo losses and flooding across the town. A tidal wave followed the storm increasing damage on the West Coast from the Pacific formosa island blows delayed the Lindberghs take-off due to the sector storm.
Pan American Airways reported Belize radio estimates place hurricane deaths at 700. The message urged relief with a broadcast request for 100 pounds of medicated cotton and a large supply of bandages.
Amateur radio operator Ellis McLane relays word from Belize that martial law has been set to curb looting after the hurricane. Water supplies are scarce with all tanks destroyed and boats damaged, while relief ships and the Red Cross coordinate aid from Belize and nearby ports.
Mrs. Benjamin Collings identified a drifting canoe as the craft used by two men who bound her husband and threw him into Long Island Sound before taking her away from the cabin cruiser Penguin. Police traced ownership to a Northport man amid the ongoing search for clues.

The New Jersey State Horticultural Society collaborates with Pennsylvania Maryland West Virginia and Virginia for a three day fruit tour September 15 to 17 through the Cumberland Shenandoah Valley. NJ growers visit orchards packing houses cold storages and by products plants visiting Martinsburg Inwood Winchester and Berryville along with Rosemont Orchards and the Battle Town Cooperative Fruit Exchange. The Reporter Star News Boys Band from Orlando Fla will perform in Winchester with local Boy Scouts as hosts.
H Randolph Stipe of Winchester Virginia released a balloon during the 1927 Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival. A Lincol n Delaware woman found it in Lincoln and notified him. Stipe notes the balloon carried a tag asking to communicate and cites a prior 1925 balloon finding in Jersey City suggesting a northeast air current.
C. M. Houchins told The Star he won the bicycle race at the Winchester Fair, correcting a Thursday paper that had credited C. M. Hodgson.

The attachment against K P Ketchum and World of Fun Shows, a Winchester Fair attraction, was dismissed after a compromise between Ketchum and fair officials through court receivers. The deal reportedly settled near 300 dollars. Receivers had attached carnival property for a 625 dollar balance on a 700 dollar contract for fair week usage.
Police Judge Weems fined three defendants for offenses. Guy Seabright of 714 South Braddock street received 123 dollars and 30 days jail plus a one year license revocation for operating a vehicle while drunk. Dave Thomas was fined 12 dollars for being drunk in public. William Brady drew a 12 dollar fine for disorderly conduct.
Miss Mollie Kremer remains unconscious in the home of her sister on Peyton street after a stroke. Friends fear she may not recover as her condition grows more alarming. a Dallas News remark questions a China Japan conflict report as likely exaggerated.
Frederick County public schools opened with the largest enrollment in history. About 2,800 children attended the first day, while 500 more were still out. The census is being updated and will be checked against 1930 counts and last year’s registers. Delinquents will be referred to the Juvenile Court if not in compliance. The School Board allows 12 to 15 year olds to help with farm work under strict conditions. Distances to school are being recorded for compulsory attendance enforcement.
Dan Gregory and his Victor Recording and Broadcasting Orchestra, a 12 member group, will play for a benefit dance at Jordan Spring Hotel on Tuesday night September 15. Miss Lillian Anderson, hospital superintendent, urges locals to attend to support Winchester Memorial Hospital. The orchestra, praised by critics as among the best touring groups, has most recently played in major radio programs and venues.
Mrs Mary C Conner 86 widow of Dr J C Conner and mother of Mrs Philip W Boyd of this city died yesterday at her Florence Alabama home after months of illness. She is survived by a son William Conner of Florence. Funeral services were held in Florence with interment in Celot at cemetery there.
The second Sunday in September marks an annual pilgrimage to the Old Chapel in Cunningham's Parish where morning services substitute Christ Church Millwood. The stone chapel, begun in 1790 on land donated by Colonel Nathaniel Burwell, sits near Carter Hall and overlooks the graves at God’s Acre as devoted parishioners keep the site in repair.

Police report two men attempted to steal $10 from J. E. Patterson at the county fair. Patterson regained the bill with his son Charles’s help, and officers arrested Andrew Porter and Charles Keller, held at the police station.
The late summer heat wave spanned many areas with Phoenix at 104 and Baltimore near 86 at 9 am. Milwaukee and others reported high nineties while cooler relief was seen in the northwest. Several deaths and prostrations were linked to the heat as authorities warned of continued high temperatures.
Judge Stafford G. Whittle, 81, former president of the Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals, died at his Martinsville home after pneumonia. He was a first cousin of Mrs. Alexander T. Jones of Winchester and a nephew of Bishop Francis M. Whittle. Survived by five sons and two daughters. He served on the circuit bench, rose to the Supreme Court in 1901, served as its president, and retired in 1921.
The body of Raymond M. Morrow, 28, a policeman, was found under the Sixteenth street bridge over Piney Branch Valley with a bullet wound in his head. Police believe he was shot and dumped from a automobile. He was due on duty at midnight but did not appear, and no serious trouble was known.
Weather outlook for the week beginning Monday covers the North and Middle Atlantic States with generally fair skies but a middle week shower period. The new Palace Theatre on South Loudoun street will house more than eight miles of wiring and thousands of bulbs. General Electric and Curtis Lighting engineers worked with Herman Hable and G. A. Butler to plan marquee signs lighting and stage effects including a 52 circuit switch panel and a chaser letter light. Projections will use Western Electric gear with collaboration from the Philadelphia firm and New Britain company engineers have contributed exterior lighting plans.
The congregation will meet after a Sunday sermon at the Clearbrook Presbyterian Church to act on the resignation of Rev. Dr. J. B. Bittinger of Bunker Hill West Virginia. He has announced his intent to retire after many years of service.
