The twentieth call for selectees was received today by Frederick county Selective Service. It orders men to report for induction in October. On the same day eighteen white men are ordered from Winchester and on October 10 two colored men are to report from Winchester.
Fourteen year old Billy Powell was forced from his bicycle by two cars traveling at high speed on the Ber ryville turnpike near the Blue Bird Inn yesterday afternoon. He suffered a dislocated shoulder and was taken to his grandmother’s home and then to a doctor for treatment. His condition today is reported as satisfactory.

The community mourns the sudden death at her North Washington street home of Mrs. William P. Massey from a heart attack. Born in Boston she was the daughter of Massey and lived in the west before moving to Winchester thirty years ago where the Masseys have since resided. On her mother's side she was descended from pioneer missionaries.

Moscow reports say the Red Army routed the Twenty-ninth German infantry division in a Gomel port attack inflicting thousands of casualties. The offensives involved a broad counter attack in key sectors as Luftwaffe raids struck Moscow but were repelled by night fighters and anti-aircraft fire.
Senator Clark charges six or seven men control the motion picture industry and inflame the public as the interstate commerce sub committee enters its second day of probing wartime propaganda. Wendell Willkie, representing producers, demands a view of alleged propaganda films before accusations proceed. Willkie also releases a letter urging the committee to address Senator Nye’s claim that the government asked a producer to make propaganda.
