The Grottoes of the Shenandoah, famed underground marvels in Augusta County, were sold to the Pennsylvania Railroad System. The 136 acre tract along South River is valued around 175 600 dollars and plans include rail sheds, a boulevard to Riverside Park, a new bridge, a tourist hotel, and an expanded bathing beach.
At the American Legion Auxiliary meeting at Mrs. W. A. Baker’s home the group set Armistice Day November 11 for memorial Avenue dedication. Defense Day in Winchester Virginia may feature a squadron of airplanes over the Shenandoah Valley for volunteers. Acting Secretary of War Dwight P Davis forwards the request to the Navy and outlines a policy to allow Army flying exhibitions linked to government projects or training. He notes cooperation with the District of Washington and stresses funding and suitable conditions for such flights.
Ruebush of Dayton Rockingham county was named by the Seventh Virginia district Republicans as their candidate for Congress to oppose Democrat Thomas W Harrison of Wythe. Former Harrisonburg mayor John W Morrison Elizabeth Kern Winchester and J S Haldeman were discussed but Ruebush won the nomination. He previously ran for Congress and various local offices.
Governor E Lee Trinkle fractured his left arm when he was thrown from a chair aboard the Virginia fish and game department boat Commodore Maury en route to the St Mary river conference with Maryland Governor Ritchie. He received first aid at Irvington then was sent by train to Richmond for X rays.
Frank W. Shenk the proprietor of the White Sulphur Inn near Bartonville denied circulating rumors that negotiations were underway to sell the well known chicken and waffle roadside house. He stated the business is strong and he has no plans to dispose of the property. The Star was informed the report was in circulation but Shenk insisted there was no truth to it.
In Fresno on September 9, William Jennings Bryan urged Americans to learn from Europe where concentrated wealth threatens democracy. He defended Davis and Bryan’s candidacy and said the oil investigation has accelerated progressive momentum, while denying personal attacks on opponents.

At a special Legion meeting the Robert Y. Conrad Post elected Captain George H. Roszel commander for the coming year. Allen Gray was made vice commander and other officers and committees were chosen. The post urged members to assist with Defense Day activities on September 12 and to wear uniforms at the Legion Building.

The Virginia Woolen Company obtains stream rights to convey city trade waste to a separate disposal plant. City officials, engineers, and the company agreed on an economical method to treat non health-hazardous colored effluent, after years of surveys and regulatory review. Title to the stream rights was recorded as a precaution while awaiting sewer-line completion.
Captain n returns from the Bowdoin after a year of Arctic exploration and scientific work on board. He arrived on the Labrador coast, reports reach his sister today.
A marriage license was issued September 6 at the city clerk’s office for Charles C. Hughes a spinner from Hagerstown Maryland now residing in the city and Irene McKinney daughter of William McKinney of this city. The notice appears amid a page of local advertisements for products and services.

Reported in Washington on September 9 1929 a fleet of 1800 air flyers began a cross country flight from Mitchel Field New York to Washington with planned stops at Aberdeen and Bolling Fields amid delays and weather notes. General Patrick in charge of the air corps advised expediting the start. The procession of planes passed over Wilmington at 12 32 p m in daylight with forecasts of rain and favorable conditions expected.
