Rail disaster in Philadelphia leaves 65 dead
Twisted wreckage of the Pennsylvania Railroad's Congress Limited killed 65 people and injured at least 123 as eight cars derailed near a curve in northeast Philadelphia. The hot box in the seventh coach caused the wheels to burn loose, sending the Washington to New York express into a pole and leaving passengers buried under debris as rescue crews worked through the night. A Marine lieutenant’s body was among the first recovered.
