Army ambulance detachments began a systematic search in the hurricane hit lower Rio Grande Valley for injured refugees. Red Cross preliminary survey found 24 deaths and hundreds injured along the paved area. Destitute families numbered 3,750 with 4,000 homes destroyed and 8,000 damaged. Condition Of Injured Hunter Very Critical
Marvin Helsley aged 17 of Strasburg was critically injured by a gunshot in the abdomen while hunting. The accident occurred when he tried to kill a wounded squirrel with the rifle butt, the weapon exploding. He was rushed to Memorial Hospital for treatment.
