President Roosevelt told Rear Admiral Richard E. Byrd of full government support for a new Antarctic scientific expedition set to depart September 25. The letter highlights weather studies, extensive surveying of unexplored areas, and uses the Bear coast guard cutter.

The Winchester and Clarke County Garden Club will sponsor a large flower show at the George Washington Hotel tomorrow from 3 to 9 p m. with 34 classes including dahlias gladioli roses zinnias and delphinium. Veterans claim drive reported by local Red Cross chapter

Report to Council Chamber by American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Red Cross details special claims work for Winchester and Frederick County veterans whose pensions were cut or discontinued. Beulah Russell noted over fifty five disabled vets and five widows visited, with appeals due within six months from July first. Survey Shows High Damage By Texas Hurricane

Army ambulance detachments began a systematic search in the hurricane hit lower Rio Grande Valley for injured refugees. Red Cross preliminary survey found 24 deaths and hundreds injured along the paved area. Destitute families numbered 3,750 with 4,000 homes destroyed and 8,000 damaged. Citrus groves lost a six million dollar crop. cotton also leveled. Property damage ran into millions.

Hand Cut Off In A Feed Grinder At Marshall Farm

Mr. Putman, employed on John F. Walker’s farm in Marshall, lost his hand when it was caught in a feed grinder. He was taken to Memorial Hospital this morning where doctors treated him. Despite weakness from blood loss and shock, his condition seemed favorable later in the day.

Condition Of Injured Hunter Very Critical

Marvin Helsley aged 17 of Strasburg was critically injured by a gunshot in the abdomen while hunting. The accident occurred when he tried to kill a wounded squirrel with the rifle butt, the weapon exploding. He was rushed to Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Impressive Rites Conducted For J. Howard Cather

Hobo's claim links Charlottesville murder to Winchester arrest

M. Cox, a professional hobo from Anywhere, says he identified one of three assailants in a Charlottesville killing of a hobo named Blackie. He says the trio fled after a .25 caliber Luger shot Blackie, Cox was jailed then released, and Winchester police arrested Cox’s suspect along with two others.
