Ran Shields defeated Sandy Baker in a five set playoff to win the 1928 Winchester Golf Club championship on the club course. Shields won 3 sets to 2 with strong net play and advantageous lobs, overcoming wind and Bakers passing games to claim the handsome cup.
The Postal Telegraph Cable Company will open a permanent Winchester office around October 1. It leased ground floor space in the Henry building on North Loudoun Street opposite the Colonial Theatre. The firm promises modern telegraph and cable service at intra state rates about 20 percent cheaper than competitors.
The weather forecast for the week ahead calls for showers Sunday night and likely Monday and again Wednesday and Thursday across Many, North and Middle Atlantic States. Virginia election rules dictated the last filing day yesterday for printed ballots on November 5. J. S. Haldeman failed to file in Frederick County, so his name will not appear there, though it will appear on ballots in Winchester Clarke and Frederick via other filings. In Frederick only Joseph S. Denny is listed for the House of Delegates with write ins possible in some locales. Other Winchester offices show unopposed or two-candidate races with several officials named.
Atlantic Life Insurance Company sues John W. Rosenberger as administrator of Ralph R. Rosenberger's estate in Winchester. The suit's grounds are undisclosed. The appraisement shows the Atlantic owed $25,000 on a life policy, marked not paid, while other insurers are listed as paid.
Authorities issue an on the lookout notice for 27 year old Luther Grayborn in Roanoke Virginia regarding the assault on Frances White, a Black woman. He allegedly fired a double barreled public safety item and then clubbed her. He is 5 feet 6 inches, very black, with a facial scar, wearing gray trousers and a red sweater.
A dynamite bomb 18 inches long was found today in the automobile of R C Hoiles, Mansfield publisher. The device was connected to the motor and removed without an explosion. Hoiles publishes the Mansfield News Journal and other papers.
The Handley Schools opened the 1929 30 session with nearly complete attendance. Superintendent Duffey outlined the yearly policy and teachers met in topic groups led by Quarles Corkey and Petrescu. New pupils report times are set and unregistered students face late arrival restrictions.
A citizen committee scheduled a banquet for Park Association officials and the baseball team Monday at 8 pm. The event will be held at Battlefield Inn, home of Mr and Mrs S M Chiles on the Valley Pike near Kernstown.
One hundred fifty people, mostly schoolboys and girls, drowned when the Finnish steamer Jura sank in a heavy storm between Tampere and Kurn. Only fifty of the 200 passengers were saved.
Wilkins Priest, imprisoned for 42 hours in a cave in a well at Ottumwa Kansas, was released at 6 07 am today. He cried for water as rescuers brought him to the surface, after workers had started yesterday morning.
Great Britain defended the Schneider trophy in the tenth running at Ryde Isle of Wight with new speed marks. Flying Officer H R D Waghorn and Flying Officer R L Atcherley powered Supermarine Rolls-Royce machines to record speeds around 828.63 mph on the course, while Italian entries fell behind as Lieut Dal Molin finished second with 284.20 mph. Radio broadcasts of the event reached Pittsburgh via KDKA and the BBC shortwave.
An England to India mail plane crashed at Jask Persia killing three people and injuring two. Victims include Captain A. E. Woodbridge the pilot noted as a British war ace a London passenger Mr Bell and the assistant mechanic named Court. The machine and mail were burned.
Heavy week end profit taking touched off some irregularity in the stock market while the overall trend remained up. Public utility issues led the advance as trading totaled about 2,400,000 shares. A couple awakened by choking smoke fled their burning two story house near Stephens City failing to save clothing or belongings. The Albin farm residence total loss with a $2,500 replacement value, insured partly by Peoples Bank of Stephens City, and a small policy on personal effects. The fire likely started in the kitchen from a defective flue. their child was away.
Col. B. M. Roszel of this city was elected commander of the Virginia department of the American Legion at its Petersburg annual meeting. He received many congratulatory messages from friends nationwide including Governor Byrd who sent his best wishes for the Legion’s election.
Mrs Mollie V Hooks wife of the Rev J C Hooks formerly pastor of Frederick circuit Methodist Episcopal Church South died yesterday at her New Market Shenandoah county home after months of illness. She was a Mississippi native. Surviving husband a Confederate veteran and one son John C Hooks of Kansas City. Funeral at New Market Methodist Church Monday at 10 and interment in Mount Hebron Winchester at 2.
Mrs. Florence Riedy and Misses Geraldine Riedy Marjorie Kahne and Katherine Henry and Messie Gerald Riedy Ralph Ridey and Arthur Burkhart of Allentown Pennsylvania have returned to their homes after visiting here as guests of Mr and Mrs C S Hartman
The Handley Schools clinic will begin examinations of all pupils Monday morning September 16. Dentists will work in alphabetical order at the school clinics during regular hours, with findings shared with parents. 85 percent of children are expected to have defects.
Mrs. E. C. Lewis of Felix, Arizona, age 80, toured Winchester yesterday en route to Newark New York. She traveled mostly by motor bus with the Eastern Public Service Corporation, expressing confidence she would finish the long journey without fatigue.
Word comes from Winchester of the death of Mrs. Mattie Adey widow of Rev. Charl Adey former pastor of First Baptist Church. She died in Ocean City Maryland during a summer visit likely from heart attack induced by a fire that destroyed 15 small wooden buildings causing about 200000 dollars in losses. Funeral was held in Baltimore. No children survive. Rev. Adey was English born and died years ago.
