President Roosevelt said the destroyer Greer was attacked by a submarine and that American forces would eliminate the submarine if found. He noted daylight conditions and clear markings on the Greer, and discussed periscope visibility and use of listening devices.
A man died crossing a highway near a tavern as cars lined both sides of the trunk road after a Winchester incident. Authorities probe the crash and urge off roadway parking to prevent future fatalities and congestion at night.
Frederick County public schools report all vacancies filled except Middletown High School seeks a Mathematics teacher. Superintendent Leslie D. Se pp notes difficulty securing qualified math and Spanish teachers. Mrs Lor ing Woore may cover temporarily. Other appointments include Spanish English at Gainesboro and Mt. Airy principal Ms Alva Straw. Annie Preston Starling arrives to prepare for rural schools.
VICHY Sept. 5. France announced an official protest to Washington against what was described as a lying campaign in United States press about Gaston Henry-Haye, the French ambassador to Washington. The statement cited the New York Herald Tribune and said the campaign followed Marshal Petain’s appeal to the American press for greater understanding of France.
A Friday September 5 at 8 p m meeting is announced. All members are asked to represent Loryn M. Crabill Captain with designation 8 4 1p 2t.
Pyeee L. Marks of Flemington West Virginia is wiser and older three years since induction February 14. Marks sought a discharge while the war years old and not eligible for the draft in the first place.
London September 5 Capt Sir Herbert Paul Latham a wealthy baronet and former member of the House of Commons was acquitted by a court martial today on three of 14 charges. The court said findings on the remaining 11 would be announced in due course. The defense witness testified while the session was held in secret.
Winchester Evening Star announces the fourth annual picnic for employees and their families and friends this evening at a local recreation area. About 100 persons are expected to attend and enjoy games before dinner.
George William Clowser Jr., eight, son of Mr and Mrs G W Clowser of 1003 Valley Ave. was injured around 6 p m when a load of logs rolled from a wagon near the Triplett farm southwest of Winchester. He suffered cuts bruises possible internal injuries and a slight skull fracture. X ray pictures to be taken.

Chicago dispatch reports mediation between big railroads and 1,250,000 workers failed after unions rejected arbitration. Strike authorization remains in effect, with no walkout until 30 days after an emergency fact finding board reports.
Chicago reports chiefs of 19 railroad unions authorized a nationwide strike with about 900,000 non operating members setting September 11 as the strike date. Operating unions show 98.7 percent in favor from 287000 votes, with 283429 for and 3571 against. Alvaney Johnston said a strike date would be set within three days and arbitration rejected in favor of a fact finding board. Bert M. issued a statement on the union position.
Marcel Gitton a former Communist journalist who had turned against his party was fatally shot in German occupied Paris and died in a hospital. The attack comes amid a violence surge after Laval and Deat were wounded on August 27. Police sought the unidentified assailant.
Washington reports Leon Henderson urged heavy pipeline construction to ship petroleum products east as a temporary fix for air and gasoline shortages. He warned tankers would be vulnerable in war, and noted railcar movement could avert west to east oil shortages within two weeks.
The Official Wase Gazette reports German authorities confiscated Christian Science publications offices and Society for Christian Scientists properties under 1933 laws for communistic property. The ban, proclaimed July 31 for public and state protection, followed closure of reading rooms two months earlier, with all assets including real estate deposits and securities seized.
The will of the late Mrs. Rose Belle Shryock Quantz is admitted to the office of Corporation Court Clerk Peyton Marshall. It leaves the entire estate to Caroline Quantz in fee simple with Caroline named executrix and bonded for $30,000. Appraisers are F. Amos Shryock, Robert Van Meter, R. O. Fitch, J. Fred Thwaite, and J. R. Alexandria Jr.
State Senator Barr P. Harrison, who spent over a week at Memorial Hospital with bronchial pneumonia after a vacation, has recovered enough to go home. He was hospitalized for observation and treatment before his discharge.
Treasury status lists daily figures: net expenditures 19,123,930.63 and gross debt 50,844,799,832.05, with a decrease of 88,097,081.82 from the previous day. The report cites MP seaman figures and overall Treasury finances for the period.

Crucible Steel Company halted operations at its Atha works in Harrison New Jersey affecting 3000 workers on Army and Navy defense contracts. Five hundred Local 2194 steel workers began a strike over calendar week agreement abuses prompting federal and company talks that failed to restore operations.
Moscow reports Russian bombers struck Berlin targets overnight with explosions and fires. One bomber is missing. German high command says several planes attacked and one was shot down. Berlin defense claims thwarted raid with one plane down and disturbances in communications with Switzerland. British losses cited as seven fighters and one bomber. German claims include sinking a 3000 ton merchant ship and an outpost boat near Britain and Ireland.
Federal agents announce the arrest of 25 year old Mrs Helen Pauline Mayer on espionage charges in New York. She is linked to a spy ring allegedly run by Kurt Frederick Ludwig, with another suspect Lucy Boehmler and two men having pleaded guilty. Mayer lived with her parents in Ridgewood Queens and worked as a secretary. The Brooklyn native graduated from a New York City high school and attended business school. She also took German script classes run by the German American band in Ridgewood.
London officials said British shipping losses in August were no less satisfactory than July, with similar submarine activity. No monthly figures were released, but First Lord A. F. Alexander said July losses were the lowest in over a year, credited to convoys planes and North Atlantic patrols. Inference suggests July and August losses near 300000.
A M Shifflett of near Middletown lost his left hand last night at about 8 30 in a mixing machine at the O Sull ivan Rubber Company where he works. Hospital reports say his condition is good though details are sparse as of this afternoon.
Berlin reports heavy German artillery bombards Leningrad as the ring around the city tightens. The bulletin says encirclement is advancing and the city is under fire, while Estonia is described as freed from the enemy.
