British concert singer Lady Maud Warrender dies at 74
London report states Lady Maud Warrender, 74, famed concert singer and daughter of the eighth Earl of Shaftesbury, died yesterday. She sang in more than 900 performances including a 1898 royal appearance before Queen Victoria and appeared at many memorials and services during the First World War.

Plane crash kills aviation cadet Weldon Holsinger off Georgia coast
Aviation Cadet Weldon Holsinger, formerly missing after a cross country night flight, died when his B 25 bomber sank off the Georgia coast near Brunswick. Navy divers recovered his body and Turner Field officials confirmed the loss after the aircraft failed to return from a routine training flight. A Sunday storm between here and Mt. Carmel Pa delayed the release of more than a thousand pigeons bound for Winchester to start a 150 mile airline race for the Anthracite Concourse. Abner Johnson of the Railway Express Company released the birds at 9 30 on Jefferson Street near Handley School as spectators watched. Flight results were not learned.

Fire damages hotel room at Jack Hotel
Fire about 730 this morning in a room at Hotel Jack caused about 100 in damage. Everett Halley of Williamson West Virginia registered the room and faced arraignment for drunken and disorderly conduct. Russell Williams of Winchester Memorial Hospital remained hospitalized for smoke exposure with possible charges to follow. Police say the men met on the street then shared a bed leading to the blaze started in a mattress likely from a cigarette. Firemen quickly extinguished the blaze with a hose in the hall. Eugene Branch, manager, put the damage at about 100.
