An earthquake and tsunami devastate Japan, with a 200 mile affected area and fires burning in cities as authorities fear up to 500000 deaths. Rescue efforts mobilize as the disaster unfolds across multiple prefectures and coastal towns.
From Harbin to San Francisco reports trace massive destruction in Tokio and Yokohama. Death tolls run into thousands with hundreds of millions in property damage. Foreign residents killed in Yokohama as embassies and official buildings burn. Martial law and curfews prevail in the devastated zone.
Reports from Winchester Virginia note Mrs. Daniel Buchanan and her child in Nojiri about 150 miles NW of Tokyo, believed outside the quake zone. Ebert on Main Street opposite the Farmers and Merchants National Bank. The container cost 14 cents plus 3 cents state tax and 3 cents delivery and retailer profit. Ebert earns 2 cents profit per gallon, claiming a sound business basis and inviting public testing of quality. The committee may acquire two cars weekly with potential wholesale price reductions.
Hartman served as captain of the cadet corps at John Handley High School. He attended summer camps for officers during ROTC training at Camp Meade and Camp Dix, and was among only thirty men to pass the mental examination.
The Winchester baseball team lost a 1 0 decision at Woodstock as Osmer hurled for Woodstock and Schroll held Winchester to five hits while fanning three. Olmer allowed three hits and 17 strikeouts as Martinsburg Big Ridge ace Oamer starred on the mound. Norris left the game after being hit on the wrist.
Paul R. Hartman of Winchester earned top honors at Officers Training Camps, attending Camp Meade Maryland and Camp Dix New Jersey. He placed second in a class of thirty at Camp Dix, earning a second lieutenant commission in the Officers Reserve Corps and was cadet major during the encampment. At Camp Meade he won a silver cup for general proficiency. he also passed the mental exam for West Point but failed the physical height requirement by two inches. Hartman is a Handley School graduate, class of 1923, and son of Robert Hartman with strong ties to Winchester families.

The Dollar Department Store Inc located on North Main street assigned assets for creditors Saturday afternoon. Attorney H. S. Larrick named trustee with no preference, secured debts paid first then general creditors share any balance. Debts total 8,495.83. stock and assets unlikely to cover all liabilities. Trustee may sell stock privately or at auction or continue operation for creditors.
About four thousand people joined the Friendship Fire Company at Gore for its annual picnic. Attendees enjoyed attractions and food while a demonstration of a new fire truck thrilled the crowd. Transport was via Winchester and Western Railroad or car, with many taking the train. Participants returned tired but cheerful after a day of leisure. An auction followed later offering iron beds doors windows and lumber at Miller's warehouse at 2 PM September 5.
Thirty five member musical comedy troupe Cuddle Up will arrive noon tomorrow from Frederick Maryland where they perform tonight. The Market Street community theatre will show Sir Anthony Hope sequel to The Prisoner of Zenda Thursday and Friday. Tonight shows The World’s Applause with Viola Dana in June Madness Saturday.
New county pupils seeking entry to grades 7 through 12 in Winchester Public Schools must register at the Equity building on Tuesday or Wednesday September 4 or 5. If all cannot be accepted, preference will be given in registration order.
