Forty two people died and more than sixty were injured when a man dropped a fire bomb in the stairway of the Blue Bird Cafe in downtown Montreal. Four men were held for questioning as witnesses described a gray car linked to the attack and panicked patrons fleeing the burning building.
James R. Wilkins Sr president of Frederick Improvement Corp announced the downtown Acme store and adjacent lots at Braddock and Wolfe Streets sold to Carnett Investment Co of Roanoke. Carnett will take possession Oct 1 after the building is improved and Grand Piano and Furniture Co of Roanoke plans to open there. Grand Piano runs furniture stores in 15 Virginia cities. Area fronts 165 feet on Braddock and 190 feet on Wolfe. No price disclosed.
The Winchester Evening Star will not publish on Labor Day Monday September 4 due to the national holiday.
Hanoi announced it will free three American pilots held since 1968 and 1969 under its humane policy, turning them over to a U S antiwar group. The men are Navy lieutenants Markham Gartley and Norris Charles and Air Force Major Edward Elias.
Reports say nearly 400 casualties on both sides as north and south Vietnam clash north of Saigon and in the central highlands. US jets strike Hanoi area, destroy supply depots, and disrupt rail lines in the heaviest raids in five days.
Raritan Land Chairman Roger Koontz expects an excellent turnout for the Frederick County Youth Fair opening at 10 am Labor Day. The fair moves to Stonewall Raritan Fairgrounds five miles north of Winchester on Rt. 11, a 19 acre tract bought from the late Dr. Charles Anderson two years ago. Highlights include a horse-pulling contest on Sept. 9 with 16 team drivers from several surrounding states and a pig scramble at 7 30 pm Wednesday featuring six 75 pound pigs against six farm youngsters.
A federal judge ruled that secret testimony from former Atty. Gen. John N. Mitchell must continue in the Democrats 1 million civil suit over the Watergate break in and alleged bugging of their national headquarters. The judge also delayed testimony for the five men charged in the break in until after a federal grand jury decides on possible indictments.
The Associated Press reports 84 deaths in the first hours of Labor Day weekend from traffic accidents nationwide. Rain-slicked highways in the South and Southwest slow travel while most areas stay dry. the death toll runs from 6 p.m. Friday to midnight Monday.
Front Royal Town Council invoked emergency powers and appointed Mayor William A. Lillard Jr. as Superintendent of Police with full authority after a police personnel petition threatened resignations. Lt. Charles V. Rutherford to serve temporarily as chief during personnel policy review.
Carl S. Napps administrator of Winchester Memorial Hospital is named chairman of the United Fund Campaign for 1972 73. He calls a workers luncheon Tuesday at 12 15 p.m. in the hospital conference room to plan the drive aiming at 120 500 for ten agencies. The group notes a 133 000 total request but sets the goal at 120 500 allocating 24 000 to American Red Cross 24 250 to Boy Scouts 2 500 to Children's Home Society 11 500 to Fremont Street Nursery 14 500 to Girl Scouts 1 600 to Northwestern Mental Health Association 4 000 to Northwestern Psychiatric Clinic 20 500 to Salvation Army 1 300 to USD and 6 250 to Winchester Day Nursery. Administration receives 10 100. Napps has led the professional division and is active in community groups including the Rotary Club and Red Cross. He is a Centre College and Medical College of Virginia graduate and has been Winchester Memorial Hospital administrator since 1961.
Labor Day weekend starts with pleasant weather and heavy traffic but no reported fatalities. Shenandoah College opens its term with a 9 a.m. convocation, and the Frederick County Youth Fair begins at 10 a.m. at Raritan Fairgrounds. An Antique Auto Meet runs 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Berryville Ave.
President Nixon flies from a Pacific summit with Japanese Prime Minister Kakuei Tanaka carrying a 1.1 billion agreement aimed at easing the U.S. trade imbalance. Kissinger stresses a framework of friendship over hard targets as both nations pledge effort toward better balance of payments and trade positions. Also note a local notice about a Diskay Discount Mart insert error and correct ad prices through September 9.
