Today marks the first day of classes for Winchester Frederick and Clarke districts with about 11 700 students expected to report to schools.
Three Pagans Motorcycle Club members were shot over the weekend in West Virginia and Maryland. Miss Mary Jo Struble of Pittsburgh is in satisfactory condition in Winchester Memorial Hospital after being shot on Sulphur Spring Road. Woodrow Absher of Garden Front, California, is in serious condition in Morgantown after a head wound at a Mt. Storm tavern fracas. James Kuhn of Elk Garden, West Virginia, is in satisfactory condition in Oakland Md after a elbow wound from the Mt. Storm incident. No arrests have been made and police investigate the farm gathering and tavern confrontation as the Pagans converged for an annual meeting.
Town Creek reports 375 patients treated at Winchester Memorial Hospital over Labor weekend from 5 p.m. Friday to midnight last night. The Sunday 30 to 11 shift saw 64 patients. emergencies included motorcycle and auto accidents and bites. The Vernon Eddy Chapter of DeMolay broke an endurance record rising from 168 hours to 222 hours 22.22 seconds, running from Aug 22 at Silver Lake to 3:22.22 p.m. yesterday.

This past month saw 5.57 inches of rain in the local area, 2.93 inches more than last year and 1.83 inches above the 54 year average. The hottest days were August 25 and 31 at 90 degrees, with most days in the 80s. In August 1968 temperatures reached 98 on three days. September opens warm and humid with possible showers forecast through tomorrow.

In Lovingston Virginia flood recovery crews unearthed more victims as 106 dead and 67 missing statewide with 86 dead and 53 missing in Nelson County. Civil Defense said 300 residents searched the hardest hit areas while 350 volunteers helped set up mobile homes for 800 displaced.
Police investigate theft of a 16 foot vacuum hose from a car wash on Berryville Ave. Owner George Nickson reported the loss to Winchester police last night. Investigators are examining the scene and reviewing security footage for leads.
Helicopters landed 400 American Air Cavalry troops to reinforce South Vietnamese commandos battered for days near Saigon. Casualties included 26 South Vietnamese killed 120 wounded 17 missing and four Green Beret advisers wounded. North Vietnamese losses unknown. High command cited tough jungle fighting and ongoing patrol sweeps amid anniversary of Ho Chi Minh’s proclamation.

Fire officials report a short in wiring caused fire and smoke damage at 43 Race St with the basement and side partition burned. The home, owned by Joe Bayliss, was struck around 10 56 p m Saturday and controlled soon after. Additional weekend incidents include a boxcar smoke reading on N Cameron St and a tree house fire on Hollingsworth Drive likely started by children. A garage at 529 Fairmont Ave also caught fire around 6 55 p m Saturday with minor damage.
A Winchester woman and two Front Royal men were among 22 killed in Labor Day weekend crashes in Virginia as national deaths reached 583 with more reports expected. The Winchester victim was Lovenia Randolph Washington, 74, dead on arrival at Winchester Memorial Hospital. Front Royal victims were James Barton Fussell, 21, and Dan Strother Price, Jr., 48. The toll for the year climbed to 824 in Virginia and a nationwide total hovered near 625 to 725 as the holiday ended. Several others were treated and released locally from injuries.
In SOUTH BEND INDIANA the special Episcopal Church convention moves toward endorsing a campaign for large scale financial payments to blacks. The BEDC seeks billions from churches to compensate for past white treatment of Negroes, a historic first for a major religious body.
