On the first day of the Labor Day weekend 84 deaths were reported including 80 in traffic and two each in boating and miscellaneous causes. The National Safety Council warned of up to 420 traffic deaths and 170000 injuries in the period.

Andrew Robengo 82 of Vineland N J died after a 10 foot plunge down stairs at Shenandoah County courthouse while awaiting his grandson Richard John Bacingalupo 21 to be sentenced for grand larceny. Bacingalupo received a three year suspended sentence and six years probation with about 650 dollars in damages.

In Front Royal Virginia the second public school in the Shenandoah Valley was desegregated yesterday without incident. Principal Herman D. Frank Jr. joined the third grade and two younger students James E. Grier and James A. Frank were assigned to the formerly all white school under a court ordered plan. The scene drew only parents and a police presence, with no boycott or protests unlike 1959.
