Japanese raids strike Shanghai surrounding regions guarded by U S forces. Reported heavy resistance faced by advancing units. Allies warn British to evacuate outposts on the western boundary as the conflict widens.
An unconfirmed report from Shanghai states Chinese military planes may have flown to Japan proper and bombed Kagoshima in Kyushu. Kagoshima lies on Japan’s southern coast with about 137000 residents. the claim follows prior Chinese threats to strike across the Yellow Sea. Earlier, Japanese air units bombed northern districts near Shanghai’s international settlement at sunset.
Japanese air squadrons bombed the international settlement at sunset, causing destruction to life and property but not achieving a military objective. Marines faced fire from Japanese bombers and naval guns as fighting raged nearby near Paoshan and Woosung with Chinese lines holding.
