Sgt. Thomas S. Clem of Middletown died in Vietnam from wounds received in combat. He served in Company D, 27th Infantry, 25th Division and was a 1965 James Wood High School graduate. Survived by parents and several siblings, with funeral arrangements pending.

The Viet Cong fired four mortars near the Independence Palace during a reception for President Thieu and Vice President Humphrey. No one inside the palace was harmed though a shell wounded three people outside. The attack prompted counterfire as security and U.S. forces guarded the area. the dinner proceeded as planned.
