Allied reports detail German losses in the Dnieper battle with prisoner totals under scrutiny to gauge remaining strength. Moscow said up to 500000 could be trapped, while previous disasters at Stalingrad and Tunisia left 467000 prisoners.
Yugoslav guerrillas crossed into Hungary in continuing operations against German and satellite forces. Tito’s communique reports attacks along the Dalmatian coast with a German column defeated after ten hours of fighting and about 150 Nazi casualties. Allied air support aided Dalmatian actions near Ston, Metkovic, Split, and Klin.
The fourth work stoppage in seven months hits West Virginia's coal fields with rising idle mines. In McDowell county miners provide 25 percent of the state's bituminous output as 16,245 workers across eight counties stay idle. Pocahontas operators report likely no third shifts and near total production halt Monday, amid 38.6 percent idle in their field.
The Shenandoah Area Council and Shawnee District sent Basil Starkey and other officials to Region Three of the Boy Scouts of America in Harrisburg Pennsylvania. About 350 attended the annual gathering with Governor Edward Martin and military officials speaking on Scouting's value to citizenship and service.

A night depository bag with an estimated 800 to 900 dollars disappeared at the Food Center at 103 North Loudoun Street. Police questioned several in-store persons as of 1 45 PM with no charges or solid clues yet. Store manager Winston L. McKay said the loss was uninsured and included cash from yesterday plus several hundred dollars. The bag No 142 came from Farmers & Merchants Bank and was used by cashier Jack McAboy to make change.
Winchester Frederick and Clarke county voters face a single contest on November 2 with Burgess Democrat facing James M. Dawson Jr. Republican for the State Senate 25th District. Polls open sunrise to sunset in City Hall precinct with entrance via Bosca wen street.
A brakeman was injured when two Pennsylvania Railroad freight trains collided in yard between Baltimore and Washington. Eight cars derailed three caught fire burning overhead electric wiring by Howard bridge. Main line traffic halted about three hours with traffic rerouted later. Cause not yet determined.
Virginia's community canneries processed more than a million cans of fruits and vegetables this summer with plans to reach two million after meat processing expands. D J Howard and Martha Creighton supervise the program as 700 small centers and 68 larger plants operate with federal funding and farmer labor. Mrs Stuart resides at 230 West Boscawen.
