75 Trapped In Gold Mine Shaft Cages

Seventy five miners, including 10 whites, were trapped in two cages after a shaft winding accident at Western Deep Levels Mine near Carletonville south west of Johannesburg. One cage held 50 Africans and 5 whites at 1000 feet and the other 15 Africans and 5 whites at 5000 feet. Four 6000 foot wire ropes broke. emergency brakes stopped both cages.

Trapped German Miners Report They Are Fit and Well

Three German miners trapped in a flooded iron mine for over 80 hours report they are in good condition. They surfaced via a 259 foot shaft to an air pocket and expect a second, larger shaft to reach them by Wednesday.

A light shower today brought the inlet of rain to the Winchester Fruit Laboratory, ending a 29 day stretch with no measurable rainfall. The last measurable rain fell Sept 28 29 with 1.24 inches, while October could set a dry record if no rain occurs by Friday.

Former Senator Tom Connally Dies at 86 in Washington

Former Senator Tom Connally of Texas died at his home in Washington from pneumonia at age 86. He served 24 years in the Senate, chaired the Foreign Relations Committee, and helped push Franklin Roosevelt's United Nations plan. Connally had long been ill and passed away with his wife beside him.
