Eisenhower Attacks Stevenson as Untutored on World Relations

General Eisenhower charged Adlai Stevenson with being untutored in the tough business of world relations. He cited Stevenson's San Francisco remarks on compromising with the Soviet Union and warned such talk could invite war. Eisenhower's Pittsburgh speech framed this as a dangerous mentality. He planned further appearances near New York to press the Korea peace issue and vow to visit Korea if elected.

Reds Strike Main Allied Lines On Sniper Ridge

About 700 Chinese Reds attacked under a bright moon and stormed the main Allied lines on Sniper Ridge. North Korean Reds also pressed Heartbreak Ridge with two assaults, while U N troops counterattacked fiercely. Marines mopped up remaining resistance on the Eighth Army left flank, destroying a 3000 man Communist regiment and claiming firm control of key ridgelines as warplanes pounded the area.

Native Clarke County physician dies at 78

Dr Robert Cooke, lifelong Clarke County native and physician, died at his home near Lexington Virginia at age 78. He helped Walter Reed’s yellow fever experiments in Cuba earning a special Congressional medal. Survived by wife Nell Jones two daughters and a sister, funeral set for Wednesday at the Old Chapel near Boyce in Clarke County.

Nine Ferocious Dogs Kill Farmer in Mississippi

In Philadelphia Mississippi a 47 year old farmer William Pierce was mauled by nine ferocious dogs. County Attorney Laurel Weir described extensive injuries including flesh eaten from limbs. The body was found in a ditch Saturday. Sheriff Madison Spears ordered the nine dogs shot after the incident.

President Truman on the move to Minnesota denounced Republican tactics as smear and fear aimed at Gene McCarthy. He warned such methods threaten American rights and liberties and took a jab at a one party press for accusing him of mud-slinging while defending his truth against GOP attacks.
