Stockholm reports the 1969 Nobel Prize in economics went to Ragnar Frisch of Norway and Jan Tinbergen of the Netherlands for developing dynamic models to analyze economic processes. Beckett wins literature prize. he will not attend the ceremony in Stockholm. Tinbergen has led UN development planning efforts since 1966. Frisch, a long-time Oslo University professor, has advised in economic planning for developing nations.
Smoke shrouded the Pyletown Road house as Boyce and Enders firemen fought a blaze believed to start near a chimney in an upstairs bedroom heated by a coal stove. Mrs. Thomas’s four children alerted neighbors. fire destroyed the upstairs before control. The owner is Harold Hawkins of Millwood.
Severe earthquakes hit Banja Luka and surrounding areas in western Yugoslavia killing at least 11 and injuring hundreds. A 10-year-old died as buildings collapsed along Marshal Tito Street and the Plaza of the Republic remained largely intact. Pickets are up at General Electric plants across the nation as unions representing about 147000 workers strike for higher wages and cost of living protection. GE rejects binding arbitration and aims to keep plants open amid a largely nonunion workforce and a coalition led by IUE AFL CIO and UE.
In Indianapolis a drag race caused a high speed crash that killed eight people in a burning sedan. Stephen Coleman 25 and his passengers were returning home when a 70 mph crash with Dalton Wallace 26 caused a fuel fire. Wallace survived with serious injuries as the other racer fled.
Arab leaders pressed to ease the Lebanon crisis between the army and Palestinian guerrillas as Tripoli kept a 24 hour curfew. Reports say Beirut and other cities moved toward normal life while Egypt Syria and Libya warned Beirut and sought cease fire talks with guerrillas.

Gov Mills E Godwin Jr urged voters to back Democrat William C Battle for governor and criticized Republican A Linwood Holton for "irresponsible and conflicting" promises. He argued Republicans favor higher taxes and warned of joint budget risks and flawed tax and schooling proposals.
The Richmond News Leader endorsed Republican gubernatorial nominee A. Linwood Holton, the first GOP governor candidate endorsement in its 73 years. The editorial urged conservatives to move to the Republican party and said Holton could restore Virginia to national leadership and offer conservatives a home again.
