Winchester and Frederick county Selective Service boards request 25 men for pre induction physicals next month. Ten from the city and fifteen from the county will be sent to Alexandria on November 9 or 19 based on race.
Dr. Stuart McGuire of Winchester and Richmond, long a leader at St. Luke’s Hospital and president of the Virginia Medical College, dies at 81. Survived by four children, funeral set at St James Church in Richmond.
AFL President William Green voices sympathy toward John S. Lewis’s proposal that President Truman intervene in the French mine strike. He notes he would not approve using union funds to break the strike and remains cautious about acting without more information.
The late Benjamin Arthur Strawderman of Winchester and Hayfield left $2000 in his will to the Salvation Army in Cumberland Maryland to build a children’s playground. Shenandoah Valley National Bank is administrator of the estate. Strawderman, who died at 48 after a gastric surgery left him stomachless for five years, was known for thrift and lived in Cumberland during illness.
The United States Britain and France agreed to a full review of reparations allocations for German industrial plants. A U.S. committee will study a list of plants to decide future actions while dismantling continues at other sites. Deliveries of dismantled parts will halt until decisions are made. France and Britain will cooperate.
Chief J. Thomas Boyd announced eight Winchester fire company drivers have been sworn in as special police Their jurisdiction covers in and around the engine houses and at the scene of a fire or at a fire call
Twenty five officers attend the Winchester Police School refresher course with three from Leesburg and two from Front Royal. The second session will be held this evening with State police instructors discussing accident investigation and traffic problems. Special FBI Agent Sterling Donahoe of Richmond led Monday’s session on public relations and testifying in court.
The 1949 Community Chest drive may reach $20,000 at the report meeting at 7 30 tonight in the George Washington hotel. Ed Molden is in charge of the campaign and all division heads should be prepared to report on their work to date.
Virginia Technological expert J L Maxton told Virginia State Grange members the price support program boosts and sustains farm output roughly 10 percent above prewar levels and keeps food prices from rising. He noted beef, hogs, poultry and fruit lack full support yet prices remain high, while wholesale price levels are expected to ease after a few months.
Mrs. Fannie Rockwell of Danbury Conn marks her 104th birthday by announcing she will vote this year for the first time in her life. She cuts cake as two daughters four grandchildren four great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren look on.
Israel rejects the United Nations cease fire order and says withdrawal to pre conflict lines is negotiable. Foreign Minister Moshe Shertok sent the reply to Dr. Ralph Bunche, who will present it to the Security Council for interpretation.
In heavy fog near Uhrichs ville Ohio a Pennsylvania train struck a truckload of steel. Engineman Gordon C. Aley and fireman Charles A. Carr were killed. Truck driver Gregory Karavanic of Glenshaw Pa. was critically burned. Eleven people injured, including three passengers. ten treated at the scene.
The San Bernardino Sun-Telegram reports a family poll of Smith and Jones households showing voting patterns mirrored the overall electorate. Dewey Wheeler 53.79 percent, Truman Barkley 38.44 percent, Wallace Taylor 1.93, undecided and minor parties 5.82.
On the Truman campaign train in New England the president called Gov. Thomas E. Dewey vicious toward teachers and quot ed a Lane report claiming Dewey said the school lobby is the most vicious and dishonest. Dewey denied the assertion and Truman tied it to education funding and living wages for teachers.
Frank L. Webster of Charles Town reports his taxi was hijacked yesterday on Route 604 near Ebenezer church Clarke County. The 1947 Plymouth sedan was found abandoned near Berryville. Webster described his hijacker as a white man 40 to 50, about five eight, 135 pounds, wearing khaki pants and a white shirt. He was robbed of $80 and his rang and cab. Webster hitchhiked back to Charles Town.
Paris October 27 United States Britain and France offered Russia a new chance to end the Berlin blockade on the basis of the Six Nation compromise vetoed earlier in the United Nations Security Council. The three ministers issued a joint communique after a 70 minute meeting to leave the Berlin question on the Security Council agenda and said they would be guided by the six power resolution.
Dr. George Gallup of the American Institute of Public Opinion called President Truman's doubts about poll accuracy part of politics. He said the Gallup poll shows Dewey without a substantial lead throughout the campaign.
Gov. Thomas E. Dewey pressed a strong critique of Truman foreign policy as he campaigned toward Cleveland. He claimed the administration failed to win peace and delivered millions into Soviet bondage while appeasement and bluster alternated.
New Yorkers resumed commuting as the city’s largest bus strike shows signs of easing. A CIO led four hour stoppage aimed at back wages totaling about five million dollars prompted partial walkouts and a power clash between TWU factions led by Michael J. Quill and Austin Hogan.
Police Justice E F Clements fined three men fifty dollars each for selling Bibles without city licenses. Payment of the fines was suspended.
Former governor Dixon of Alabama will address a tri state rally at the Armory at 8 pm in favor of the States Rights Democratic party. Col James M Thompson will introduce him, with W W Baker presiding. McKlwee's Municipal band plays 7 45 from 7 45. Dixon aims to broaden the party northward and boost Democratic votes for Harrison and Robertson.
The American war crimes court in Nuremberg acquitted 13 of Adolf Hitler's top military leaders of plotting to start World War II. The three judge panel ruled acts by midlevel officers did not constitute planning or waging war under international law. The conspiracy charge was dropped. verdicts on war crimes against prisoners and civilians to come.
Shenandoah Area Boy Scout council reports total membership 1035 after 76 new scouts joined this month. C. S. Hartman led the nine county roundup with gains in Potomac Shawnee and Two Rivers districts while Cub Scouts total 208 hindered by sponsorship delays.
The United States is poised for swift approval of a North Atlantic security treaty with the Western European Union five nations Britain France Belgium the Netherlands and Luxembourg. Drafts are ready, ambassadors will be asked to pursue formal treaty steps in Washington, with Senate action anticipated within three months.
State highway officials say R. 50 between Alexandria and Winchester may finish in November if weather cooperates. Crews build a 40 foot arch and nearly a mile of new roadway west of Middleburg while addressing six springs that threatened the hillside. Hodgin and Gilliam of Upperville hold the $150 000 contract to replace an old one way stone bridge on R. 50 and drain the roadway without cutting farm water supply.
